Its on the hose with the hose clamp on the second picture. Its about an inch away from the hose clamp and you can feel it by squeezing the hose.

I took my restrictor out, my only concern is how would I know if detonation is happening? What does it sound like?

Only your knock sensor can hear knock unless it's REALLY bad andor at really low RPM. That's why people use logging tools for ECUs to read knock counts. I don't think the EVO ecu can give knock counts, but you can probably log timing, which corralatetes to knock. If the computer isn't pulling timing, you can bet knock counts are low, and vice versa. Once in a while if your computer pulls enough timing you can hear the tone of your motor change, it sort of goes into a low muted grumble with a noticable loss of power. Kinda sounds like a boat.

I took mine out today.. kinda a pain in the *** to get it out of the hose..

Spikes to 1.5 bar now.. pulls hard but noticed the hood felt pretty warm after a drive.. could be the warm weather that is finally here..

putting it back in tomorrow just to be safe..

The one by the solenoid is big end towards solenoid and small end towards wastegate, but I don't think it really matters if it's the other way. Probably just the way it was installed in the hose when they are made that's all.

Took mine out last night. Same results as most people are reporting spike to 21 psi then tapering down to 18-19psi. This is good... The bad thing is that at times the boost will only hit 10psi or so. Why so inconsistent?

I plan on installing my MBC very soon so I can hopefully have a constant 19 psi all the way through.

restrictor pill

Below is a pic of the restrictor, given it is so small it is difficult to photograph. The result was a spike to 21.5 (maybe 22) and it tapers down to 18 and holds at 18 all the way to 7000 RPM. This is with a 3" DP and stock exhaust. As soon as I get the exhaust on it may go higher.
Next plan is to enlarge the restrictor. It currently fits a 1/8 drill bit perfectly. I am going to use a 5/32 bit to open up the hole and test it on the car. Looks like 5/32 is the only upsize that will work.
gooing back to stock setup, you said if should go 1 inch from soleniod? small side goes in first or large opening?

BTW... to anyone who wants to take their stock restrictor and drill it out to 5/64 like timzcat...i just struggled for a while trying to do that and then it hit me APPLY WD-40 OR ANOTHER LUBRICANT ONTO THE INSIDE OF THE PILL!!! After that it took me about 10 seconds to drill though by putting the wide end onto the drill bit and pulling on it gently with some pliers.

Hi guys, I know this is getting boring but!! I have a new Jap import E9 2006 had 30km so unmodified in Japan. (Car is now in NZ)
Mine most defiantly has to restrictor pills next to what appear to be two boost control solenoids (stacked one on top of the other)!!! There are two BCS and a hose from each that tee them together see pic hoses with the clamps. There is also a vent tube from each solenoid and a tee joining them before they feed back to the intake pipe. In the pics attached I have put white tape where the restrictors were. Question, did I do the right thing removing both these restrictors, as they are both in the same loop of hose. Car feels good without them, but mine has no boost gauge yet!! So I can’t see boost level.

Cheers
Darren

i know this is old post but 4 years later, i am sitting here at 10PM and want to drill the restrictor pill that you are talking about with 9/64 and unless i am missing something its impossible. the diameter of drill bit is larger than that of the restrictor pill so hw can you drill it?

EDIT i guess i should have read the post, 5/64 is what i want

As far as I can tell that is the only restrictor in the lines.

If anyone decides to attempt this mod, be sure and be careful with the restrictor when drilling it out. I basically used a pair of pliers to hold it. Wasn't easy but I didn't over squeeze it and collapse it so it was worth the hassle. Once drilled you could definitely collapse it, but I am not talking fragile.

I drove it a bit and have a really good idea where it's at. The peak is the hardest to see cause I still have to watch the road. If I find any variation in these numbers while driving tomorrow, I will update the post.
