Those of you with DIY painted stock rims...

(1) How long since you painted them?
(2) How is the paint holding up? Chips? Peeling?
(3) Any words of wisdom in hindsight??

Got them painted 2 months ago.
Paint is holding up great. No chips or peeling.
No words of wisdom really...go for it!

Don't paint them yourself, get them powdercoated and you'll probably be much much happier with the end result. I have yet to see a set of DIY painted rims that look nice, powdercoated professionally seems to be the way to go for a really nice clean look.

paint them much cheaper
powercoat is nice but $$$

when painted just watch out for the type of cleaners you use when cleaning them
some can fade the paint fast

Not a lancer, or stock wheels, but here's my mirage with my wheels, I painted...

Taped off the lip and tire, scuff with steel wool, two coats of primer, three coats of bronze wheels paint, two coats of clear coat.....been going strong since early spring and look great.

It's all about taking time and patenice

Good choice I wipe them down every now and then just a little bit so the brake dust doesnt stick on there, aside from that they never get dirty.

Since it involves high heat it can weaken some metals.

Yeah. Except in Arizona, where that's just May!

And really, I don't know if/how/when/why it's a problem, I've just heard that powder coating is bad for some metals because of the heat.

powdercoating weakens the rims and can cause the rims to crack or break. It doesnt happen all the time but it does happen. I myself have painted rims that i did myself. I took 2 days to do mine and a lot of coats and clear and most people can't tell the difference. Most people actually think they are aftermarket. Paint is holding up good. I do have some chipping but thats cuz of me hitting them with my tools when taking them off my car. Its all up to you though if you want to take the time and paint, send to a powdercoater and spend a lot of money, or just buy new rims. But if you do it right then your rims should look nice.
