How to get better MPG
(Mods Sticky Please)
One thing I've seriously noticed when driving the car is the gas mileage. For me it is incredible and for others it sucks. Here are some tips from my experimentation.
MIVEC kicks in at about 3600 rpms. Before this point there is a variation on the two intake valves. One is open slightly more than the other. This causes a swirl in the combustion chamber and increases power and fuel economy. When you are cruising on the highway, stay below 75 mph in 5th gear for an extreme increase in fuel economy. I got 34 mpg vs. about 28 mpg at 85 mph.
The MIVEC switch only helps you at wide open throttle. When you cruise on the highway, you are in no way at wide open throttle. The variation in the two valve lifts before MIVEC create a more homogenous air/fuel mixture. This make for better power from less fuel. It also makes for better emissions.
This is for the 5 speed. The same is true for the automatic if you stay below MIVEC. I don’t know what the speed is on the auto, but the rpms are the same for MIVEC.

For the best "engine off" method results, just have a tractor trailer push you down the highway. You could potentially get 500 miles/gallon..or you could die. Life is a gamble though, so its up to you.

You get 28 mpg??? Damn, I regularly get 23 or 24. Do most of my driving around town and country roads though, not much freeway anymore. I thought a 4 cylinder car would get around 30...this is about the only thing I'm upset with though, so it's not THAT big of a deal.

It's the gearing that kills us. With the same gearing, the Ralliart would actually beat out the base lancers in mileage.
Yes, going slower does make for better gas mileage normally. I'm just saying that there is a big loss in mpg after MIVEC.

I've been setting my cruise on about 74mph on my way home from work (midnight on the Interstate) to stay out of MIVEC. On the way to work, I go with the flow, so usually about 85-95mph. Overall, I get ~28-29mpg. If I could keep it under 75mph in both directions, I'm sure I'd get over 30mpg.
I wish the switchover point depended on RPM and throttle, rather than just RPM. You know, kinda like turbo boost. I could get 25mpg out of my old Eclipse, or I could get 7mpg, depending on how I drove it.

Auto Gas Mileage
I have an auto and I really do hate it how many miles I get. Such a small tank compared to the engine size and I do all city driving here in TampaBay, FL. On a good tank I get about 225 @ 2000 miles before my light comes on. I also had it as little as 205 miles. Do I drive it too hard?
Here is what other 4 bangers have in their tanks (googled)
Toyota Corolla S 130hp 13.2
Hyundai elantra GT 132hp 14.5
Mazda 3 160 14.5
Nissan Sentras 126/165/175 13.2
I guess the Nissans might have the same problems too when it comes to how many miles they get since they have the same size as ours.
