Exclamation That WRX/STi exhaust sound...

is it possible to get that sound w/out buying the car? I like how it sounds, sort of like a v8, it's deep and throtty... nice tone to it. Im guessing it's just the engine sound and it's not possible. Im trying to get a deep sound, not HIGH/LOUD or annoying... how can i go about that. I like my exhaust sound now, alot of people give me props for it, but how can i go that extra mile?

i think it has to do more with their turbo back exhuast. i've heard some evo's sound like that too. it sounds mean. get a shop to make a custom catback for you and get one of those HKS titanium mufflers. that might get you close

the sound is made by the engine, not the pipes. without some mean FI, you wont get it exactly. My car does have that grundgy mean sound now, but still not the same as the evo/sti. if i turbo it, im sure it would be similar. www.vrsexhaust.com. checkout the custom exhaust group buy thread. and the hks titanium muffler is way too much $. get the megan m-specII. sounds better, same quallity, $115.

Have to agree with this, I'm a critic when it comes to exhaust and I love the rrm axleback nice deep not a note of raspyness through out the power band. Only nice and deep and not that annoying fart cans

the biggest part of the exhaust sound (not counting he engine) is the muffler. i love my megan mspec-II. sounds just like the hks titanium carbon muffler, but 1/3rd the price at the same quality. actually, sounds a bit better IMHO. magnaflow typically has a good sound, but can be a bit loud and annoying. usually not too bad tho. save urself the money and have a muffler shop do it for you. the equiv of the catback with the same muffler will run u just a bit over $100 installed.

I jsut put a smaller bodied universal magna flow on mine an ddue to the smaller body I thought it was going to be higher pitched. It wasn't. It sounds really nice throughout the whole RPM range. I really like it when Im slowing down on the freeway and downshifting. Its a good sound.

and of course we know the sti's main sound it due to the engine. but like blk-majik said its probably has a lot to do with the turbo back exhuast. I have no idea what the FI has to do with it. but everything has to due with sound.

The only evo I know of is a guy thats buys parts from me for his shop and his screams pretty loud.

Also another car that sounds pretty mean is the VW R34 if anyone has seen them yet. I can't find them forsale but I saw a couple late fall driving around

Theres a bunch of pics and other stuff here as well:

the white RA has as 3" exhaust and OBX muffler, but doesnt have a resonator.
If you want that setup, go to www.vrsexhaust.com. Call and ask for Megel or Dan. Great prices and they are making them to bolt up.

I'll be going in in a bit to have the downpipe made as well =)

The boxer engine has that mean rumble sound because they have unequal length headers. My friend that has a wrx told me that if he got equal length headers it would loose the distinct rumble and sound a little more like an evo.

But... does the unequal headers help or hinder their performance?
