If I remember correctly, RRE/RRM did a dyno on the 3G V6 Eclipses where they manually shifted the sportronic and another where they let it shift by itself. What they found out was that letting it shift by itself was smoother and kept you in the power band better. There was less torque dropoff between shifts. It's better to let it shift by itself.

Here we go:

If your even asking the question am i going to destroy my tranny then you probably shouldn't be doing whatever it is that made you make a thread with that question.

Right. Well then, thats one less question I have about my car. As I am in no hurry to trash my transmission, I will drop that habit. Thanks for the input.

I have the "triptronic" shifter or sport shifter as they call it in my wife's eclipse. eh, its better than straight auto but you're not missing a whole lot. Most of the time I just put it in full automatic. I would just drive your car normally if I were you. The manual is much better on the ralliart and its a shame you missed out on it.

Edit: before people bash sportronic shifting as shown in the link, It does give you alot more control over the car, especially in turns. Also allows you to stay in Upper mivec longer which of course the 3G eclipses didn't have.

I used to have an Eclipse GT with the Sportronic. I used to downshift waaaay too much, and eventually the flex plate shattered. Luckily it happened while I was still under warranty. I used to abuse mine a lot though, downshifted coming out of every corner and on the fwy when I wanted to pass someone. Something to keep in mind.

So is letting my auto downshift screwing up the tranny? or just when you manually do it when it really shouldnt..?

ok wait.. r u telling ur using the 1 like this. The box goes P>R>N>D>3>2>1. You PUT It on 1 ( thats the lowest gear of 1, vice versa for 2 and 3) Thera are used only for a steep hill climb or something like that. DO not use that for a start.
Jus leave it on D and let it do the shifting, jus press on the accelerator (1/2 down then to 2/3 down) get it around 3500 then mash it down, u get better throttle response. U will mess up ur engine if use those 1,2,3 , its not meant for going fast.

Letting it do its job is fine. What I was doing is the equivalent of dropping from 5th into 3rd on the fwy or from 3rd/4th into 1st when taking corners around the city. Eventually the stress took its toll on the flex plate and it went boom.
