Question Am I going to destroy my tranny?

I have couple of question about the automatic transmission, specifically in the 2004 Ralliart. Sometimes when I am going from a dead stop straight to 65-70 m.p.h. when I am stopped at the light I like to move the shifter into 1st gear and accelerate shifting where I feel its time (always observing posted speed limits, basically ). This allows me to take more advantage of the MIVEC and get a little of the thrill that the manual tranny guys get. It's not something I do all the time but whenever I am able to, I like to. How much damage am I doing to my car? I know most cars are designed to be sort of idiot-proof, but if I am acting like a huge idiot it would be too much. Also, what damage would I do if I hit the redline? The car is rev-limited right and hitting that limiter occasionally won't do any damage right? Anyway, feel free to make me feel stupid if I am acting stupid...

two reasons why i didn't buy a stick:
1. Don't know how to drive one. Makes it real hard to get home from the dealer. Oh but I want to learn. No one will sacrifice their clutch to my cause.
2. The '04 that i bought had sat on the lot for nearly a year and the dealer was achin to get rid of it so I got a very good deal on it.
There are times that i regret having to settle for an Auto but others I am grateful. Little Rock is very hilly and from what I understand getting out of 1st gear becomes even more difficult on when you are on what feels like a 45 degree angle. Being able to let of the brake and press the gas without worring about stalling is a good thing.

goto a few diff car dealships and ask to "test drive" cars, then you never really damaged anyone "specifics" clutch, just a dealships which will get ruined anyways. then you will know how to drive manual

I just don't get the point of manually shifting an auto. If you want to accelerate fast, floor it and it'll shift when appropriate.

You really should only be shifting like that if your auto tranmission was made to manually shift, which in some cars it is. The Outlander is one. If the transmission isn't built for that you are only asking for trouble. Especially if you are really pushing it hard in the lower gears. Like Otter said, just push the gas pedal to the floor, hold onto the wheel, watch your gas gauge go down and enjoy. Otherwise trade your car in for a manual and have all the fun you seem to really want anyway.

I dont really think its a good idea to do this because if you toast your tranny, its going to be really expensive to replace. On my car, even with a steptronic box, I rarely shift until on track with friends.

If you feel that you need to have quick launches, install a turbo charger or super charger. The increase in torque helps.

No tiptronics on the RAs, would be nice though especially since the new eclipses have it.

But when i first got my liscence and bought a 92 accord i blew first and second was almost there too and i think it had everything to do with me manually shifting it. Well i sold the car for $500 which is what i bought it for when the tranny was still good and never manually shifted an auto since.
