How MIVEC works

The switch occurs at approximately 3500 rpm, when the powertrain control module opens the valves longer to increase the amount of intake airflow, resulting in higher engine output. More precisely, MIVEC switches to the higher cam profile at 3600 rpm as engine speed increases, and drops back to the lower cam profile at 3400 rpm as engine speed decreases; the output torque of the low- and high-speed modes overlap at those speeds. This also means that the cam switch operation is virtually transparent to the driver, who is simply rewarded with more power.

Yes, that's the super simplified way MIVEC works. If you search the forum, you can find links to the white papers that give the in-depth details on how MIVEC works.

I still believe MIVEC works too low on the rpm band. Its naturally big displacement should be good enough to power off the line. They should have boosted it around 4800 or 5200 rpm.

BTW: My S14 is a pig off the line after 5K rpm. Otherwise, its natural TQ is pretty enough for me for daily driving.

why in the world would you want it to come on so late? its nice to have more power at about 4k. honda's vtec kicks in like 1000rpm before redline, its pretty stupid if you ask me

With that change (4500 would probably be good), it would be easy to make it rev to 7000+ RPM and make more power. Shouldn't say easy, it's got a longgggg stroke.
I think the problem then is with making it smooth, there would probably be a fairly good kick at that point.

It's important to note that the MIVEC in the Ralliart and the Evo IX are completely different and Mitsubishi does not differentiate the two simply, calling both systems MIVEC. I know this is the RA forum but just wanted to point that out.

The systems are not related in design? I know the details of it would be different, but Mitsu designed a different one for the Evo?

He's right, why would u want it kick in so late. Mitsu would have such a lead a Honda wouldn't have time to catch up b4 the race is done. I **** on VTEC.
