Going Synthetic. good or bad?

I want to go synthetic for my next oil change. I will do it at 15K so this will be only my third oil change.

Is it worth it? is it bad because I didn't do it from the start? and witch oil should I use?

i am a big fan of synthetic,
so much that i put synthetic oil in my tranny.

just so you know, if you get this done at a shop/stealership/franchise
you will pay a pretty penny. (valvoline instant oil change, Mobil 1 Synthetic + mobil one filter = 112$ after tax)

i suggest you look up a DIY and get either Mobil one synthetic or Royal Purple,
i dont remember the grade of oil, but i believe its 10w 30. and order a K&N oil filter too (you'll have to do research on that too, dont remember the size)

but i definately recommend going synthetic.

$$112 is rapeage for a synthetic oil change!

Use Mobil one synthetic, 5w30 should do just fine. I just switched to full synth and it is guud.

definitly cant go wrong going synthetic, i went synthetic on my 3rd oil change and have never looked back, synthetic is more reliable, keeps the engine cooler, and can last a little longer, only down side is the price but definitly worth it imo

The dealer showed me Castrol synthetic I don't know if that's better than Mobil one or Royal Purple?

in my opinion, all 3 are great,
but i have been hearing fantastic things about royal purple,
i run M1S right now, but my next change im going to try the Royal Purple.

I had the castrol in there before, i had no problems with it whatsoever.
also i hear some good things about the new penzoil...
i guess in the end, do a little reseach and pick your favorite.

I do most all my own stuff man. Oil changes, custom alignments, all parts installs. My labor is "cheap" (and I think it is fun).

If you do your own stuff, what happens to your warranty?

If you want a REAL syn oil you have to go with redline or amsoil or one of those high priced oils. M1 is not a group IV syn oil anymore its a group III. If you want a real syn oil you need to do a little research. M1 is good oil just not a real syn. oil.

here is some good reading on it

keep records of your maintenance and it shouldn't be a problem. they can't refuse any warranty due to you doing your own maintenance because they don't do it for free. BMW, on the other hand, does do maintenance for free and therefor can tell you doing it yourself would void the warranty.
