I just had my tranny fluid changed (Manual) and the guy thought that the ralliart takes GL-5. I looked in the book and our car takes GL-4. Will the GL-5 cause me problems?

it depends on what kind they used, i mean gl-5 is usually a heavier weight so i cant see it doing any good...id play it safe if i were u n drain n then refill...its really not hard at all...recommendation: use BG2, its synthetic n GL-4 applicated

From what i've read, GL-5 doesn't have the additives our synchros need... instead they contain sulfur additives (Mobil is a big one in this department) that kill our synchros. If I were you, I'd change it to Royal Purple Synchromax, Pennzoil Synchromesh, BGII, Quaker Synchro___, or some other GL-4 fluid asap. I wouldn't chance it over $30 bucks in fluid man.

UPDATE: I took the car back today and they told my that they don't have GL-4 with a viscostiy range of SAE 75W-85W or 75W-90 so he put in GL-5 75W-90 synthetic. Does that sound right? I don't understand what the GL-4/5 rating means. I just know it is the right viscosity.

OK... no offense, but the shop you're taking your car to is ran by idiots. There is many differences between GL-4 vs GL-5, including but not limited to additives for different types of metal. Please do yourself a favor and run to Autozone or Baxtors or somewhere and pick up some Pennzoil Synchromesh or Royal Purple Synchromax. Change your own fluid. ORRR Buy the fluid and take it back to the shop and make them change it. GL-5 will ruin your transmission.

Gear oils are classified by the American Petroleum Institute using GL ratings. For example, most modern gearboxes require a GL4 oil, and separate differentials (where fitted) require a GL5 oil. It is important that purchasers check the oil against the vehicle manufacturer's specification to ensure it does not contain any aggressive chemicals that may attack gear components, such as the phosphor bronze used in many Japanese boxes.
I would guess that a slightly different viscosity would be better for the transmission than the wrong GL rating.

also i believe the gl-5 is too slippery(the additional friction modifiers) not allowing our synchros to function properly and causing undue wear
like they mentioned above if you buy the fluid they will have to change it and look into getting a refund for your troubles.
