Fuel Consumption?!

Fuel Consumption?!
Well got my new lancer the other day and have been cruisin! But I happened to look at the gas meter and
Jeez! this car eats some gas! It was on "E"! I know its something that should be expected from a car like this, but man, gas is gonna kill me. Is there anything I could do that could help the car burn less fuel or atleast at a slower pace. My friend said something about an air intake. I have no idea what that is, but any suggestions? I don't wanna be refilling every other day!

well... in the city i get about 400km to the tank, on the highway (at 110km/h) I get about 500 to 550 km to a tank. Realize that once you hit 3600 rpms or so, the MIVEC will kick in and it'll burn a bit more fuel so if you keep it below that I find it helps the fuel economy.
Adjust your driving! Hard acceleration and speeding really does not help.

According to my scangauge I get around 24mpg if I'm being good and shifting at around 2,500 and never putting the throttle down.
But I usually end up gunning it by the end of the day =\

Yea, my buddies Tibby has a 55L tank, where as the ralliart has a 50L tank.
I'm actually kind of glad the light comes on early. I drove back to Edmonton from Fort McMurray once and there's a 200 or 300km stretch with no services and the light came on with about 60 km to go. I was sure that this will be the night I'll run out of gas but it made it haha. It was an exciting, snow stormy night.

I don't know if this applies to the car when it's near stock, but I did some personal experimenting with mileage. I consistantly found that I would use more gas if I drive in 3rd/4th @ 2500/3000rpm in city speeds. If however I plan to use 5th gear as a majority of the gear with that tank at the city speeds, I get about 30-40km more per tank before the light comes on.

big thing is when the mivec kicks in, last summer I had a trip from SA to dallas (right at 270 miles), on the way there I set the cruise control @ 68-70ish the whole way keeping the rpms below 3500 and away from mivec, I filled up before I got on the highway and filled up again right when I got there, I ended up getting about 31.8 mpg.
On the way back, I still used cruise control, but set it at 75+mph (parts of the highway here in texas have the speed limit at 80 ) and obviously this kept the engine in the mivec range the whole trip and I got about 28 mpg on the way back.
Last spring break I did something stupid, I wont say how far or how fast exactly, because I'm slightly ashamed of doing it and do not want to advocate it, but long story short I found out that my car gets at least 24 mpg in 5th gear no matter what the speed.
