Engine is toast; Need Suggestions

Hey guys, So my car broke down last night. I haven't had a chance to get it to a garage yet but I'm suspecting the engine is gone. I'm looking for suggestions on the best course of action going forward. I like the car and want to keep it, but I've never gone down the path of replacing an engine. Where should I look first? Also, what do you think I'm looking at as far as hurting my pocket when it is all said and done?

since your not sure just tow it to a shop and let them decide.
whatever you do, dont rush into anything.
why replace the engine? do you have a hole in it?

While I'm driving, a loud rattling sound started from the engine, then about 5-10 seconds later the engine cut off. Try to start it and it doesn't even attemtp to turn over.

yea you're gonna have to take it apart and see whats going on... might as well bring it into a shop and see if they at least can see what the problem might be without charging you.

When's the last time you changed the timing belt?

This ^ sounds exactly like a thrown rod. It would probably be cheaper to drop in a used engine from a salvage yard than have a shop tear down and rebuild your engine, even if there isn't a hole in the side of your block.

Start looking for a good used motor in the local junk yards. Should be able to find one for $500 - $750. Like this one:

Mitsubishi Outlander

Everything should be identical. Even if it's not, you can swap the bits off the blown engine onto the Outlander one.
