iPod Dock in Centre Console
I have the ipod dock shown below that came from a JVC stereo but you can see the connector is proprietary. My goal is to cut the end off and attach a usb to it to plug into my head unit. Is this possible?
The dock almost fits the ashtray hole with a few millimetres around the edge. my goal is th place the dock in the centre console (fix the edge to make it look clean), and run the usb cable to my head unit. So I need to know if it's possible to change that port to USB and if so, any suggestions on how to make the dock look clean. Putty and paint is all i can think of.

This might be what you need i think, it says the ipod end is proprietary female, so i think your plug would go in this??

Well... it is really difficult probably. You will have to look into what each pin on the JVC connector do. There will probably be power, ground, and some other stuff for data. Then you will need to look into what each connector on the USB input to your stereo do and match each of the wires off the JVC to the USB connector that you will attach and connect to your stereo.
For example if pin 1 on the USB input on the stereo is power, you will need to attach the power cable of the JVC unit to pin 1 on the USB connector. and so on and so forth for all the other wires. There is probably a handful you will have to do this for.
For ease, I would just ask JVC if they have some converter.... it is much safer and you can't easily go back if you mess up your docking unit by cutting the cable

i have a head unit with aux/usb....i wanted to to have a dock though. I already modified the dock by opening it and removing the proprietary connection and replacing it with a standard I pod cable. just had to modify the connector portion to fit in the dock...
gotta make it look clean in the car....was thinking of trying to fit it in the ashtray so the dock will be available when the ashtray lid is opened....i'll post some pics if i get it working...it'll ahve to wait till next week though.
