RE: Removing heat shield on header
Hey, quick question to anyone out there. I was thinking about removing the heat shield that goes around the header. I know its they're for relief of heat but would it create THAT much heat w/o it?
I just think its ugly looking and would preffer the look of the engine bay w/o it. Maybe get some heat wrap in lieu of the shield....

trust me the stock header is uglier than that heat shield. wait until you get a real header.

I ran mine for a few weeks with out the header cover while I was painting it with ceramic paint. it ran the same as it did with the cover on. the cover is aluminum the same as the pots and pans I cook on, heat goes straight through it. now that it is ceramic coated my car seemes to run a bit cooler and it looks nice now that its shinny black.

I got the paint from the auto parts store. I used Dupli-color 1200 degree engine enamel for the under coat. this is a very flat paint that has a lot of ceramic in it and it looks like primer. then over the top of this on the outside of the cover i used the dupli-color 500 drgree paint that is a gloss black and it looks nice. I'll try to post some pics but I'm having trouble with my camera.

I had mine Jet Hot coated. Makes the engine bay look alot better. Seems to reflect alot of the heat down as well. As for the heat sheild itself, it does alot to keep the heat down. Over time, running without it would cause alot of the wires and plastic under the hood to break down alot faster.

RonV - Don't forget though...Your evo WILL run hotter due to the turbo's.
Irh35 - So did you just use 2 paints on the header its self or did you use the 1200 paint on the header and the 500 on the alum. sheild??

I used the 1200 on the under side of the sheild and the 500 on the outside of the shield and nothing on the header because I didn't want to remove it. I did this for cosmetic reasons and used this paint because regular paint will peel off. now that I've done it I would coat the whole thing first with 1200 then use the gloss 500 just on the out side.

I just spent a couple hours on the heat shield. Sand paper... 120, 180, 240, 320 grit, then the grinding wheel with buffing compound, brown, white, red, then a little of the megiar's mag wheel polish
