He lives in a warm place and he plans to mod...Buy the Gen coupe. I think you will hit a wall as far as power goes with that auto trans though. I dont think Hyundai has ANY experience building trans. to hold any significant amount of power.

Interesting view. I think its a bad idea for the system to exist at all. On a RWD car? I've never heard of such a thing. My girl is a service advisor at a Hyundai dealer. I'm asking her to find out the details. I'm wanting to get her an RA sportback, but we are considering this car too. I'm sure practicality will win out in the RA's favor.

I haven't driven either of these cars, so my opinions are just that - opinions.
Mitsubishi has much more experience building sports cars than Hyundai. Though their partnership for the past (10 or more years?) has of course led them to share much of their technology with each other. While it's just speculation, I wouldn't be surprised if the suspension is similar between the two cars (which is also found on various chrysler cars). The engine in the R/A is most certainly better, as it is practically the same as the one found in mitsu's flagship Evo.
Since you have to get an automatic, just about all the big dog supercars are using some sort of dual clutch automated gearbox - and the one in the evo/RA is one of the top rated in numerous magazine reviews. So, if you want an auto, it'll be hard to beat the one in the ralliart. That's what my choice would be. Now to say Hyundai has no experience making transmissions, that is a bit erroneous. They are actually only the 3rd auto manufacturer to design their own 6 speed automatic in-house. It's also one of the most compact, and is registered for 300-some odd patents. Hyundai isn't really dicking around. Never the less, I would still rather have a dual clutch box.
Another not so minor detail is that one is a coupe, and one is a sedan. I guess if you don't need to practicality of a sedan ever, then this is a non-issue. Other things to consider is ride quality. I don't know what kind of back surgery you are having, but a stiff ride might not be good for you.
Overall, the most important factor is YOUR opinions. Try em both.
