In all honesty with comments like "too much car for a teenager" he's just going to want it that much more. If you want it, no one can stop you, just why I said be careful and that AWD doesn't mean nothings gonna happen. As my roommate though trying to do a turn on ice "cause i have awd" 2k in damages later, a little different thought process. I'm not saying you will be like that but just be careful, like i said I have no idea what you have driven already. If you do get it, make sure you feel comfortable behind it before you start modding. I do have to agree though that if this was my first car (it's only my second) I might have done a lot of stupid crap, i did even with my 155 crank HP RSX regrettably.

'86 & '89 MB 190E as my first cars.

There are many good suggestions here. I imagine that if he already has his sights set on a R/A and has the money, it'll be hard to convince him to get something lowlier, even if it's a good idea.

I will say this: the R/A is a great car. It will certainly be able to do things your own abilities won't be able to match, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to drive it at all. You'll just have to be careful. If you think you'll be into performance driving, I would HIGHLY advise that you get some good books, and take one of those weekend performance courses. It may set you back a couple of grand, but it will be the BEST way to quickly sharpen your skills.

Well here's my opinion.. your coming out of highschool so u must b 18 years old... and i just so happened to be 18 also. Im a freshman in college

The only difference is that the RA is my 3rd car and i have had my licence for almost 3 years.

First of all... forget about that evo... i was quoted for like 825 a month if i got an evo 10.. and thats with a good driving record. its all because of my age and "driving experience" so be4 u choose ur car look up what the insurance will b cause u dont want a second car payment every month.

Now about the car.. if u got ur mind set on a RA go ahead and get it.. ive owned a brand new mazda, brand new pontiac and now my RA and it blows the others way! The RA will give u the looks from those college ladies , the comfortability of a daily driver and the power ur 18 year old self wants. lol
I say all this but i got just one question, Have u reached the mature level to be able to handle the power in a mature way? Cause i have and it has taken me my first two years of driving to realize that a accident is a split second a way if u do something stupid. Nobody here is telling u ur not mature enough for this car. but its something u got to ask yourself. If its a no, get something else.. a civic or scion.. and in a year or 2 trade up for the RA or whatever u like.. but if its a yes.. Ill see u on the streets

^ Exactly I am also a freshman in college 19 years old and i have a RA. Yes i am paying for it myself for anyone thinking the mommy/daddy bought it for me idea. Like k said it is my third car also i started with a 2006 Mitsubishi lancer RA then i went out and bought a 2008 RX-8 when i had the money to pay for it myself and just the trouble with rotary engines i went and traded up for the 09 RA I've only had it for a little over a month. It is a lot of car yes but you can get it and be safe. Since it is your first car im sure your going to want to show it off and go fast which is a very bad idea IMO.

On a second note the RA is very impressive and a very nice car and you will Love it if you choose to get it so it it really up to you its YOUR car remember that so all that matters is that YOUR happy.

Fun for a first car (mine as well), hope you like it. I'm in the same boat as you, except I'm 2 years out of high school & 20, looked at all the cars I could afford and decided on an RA. Trust me, these guys are speaking from experience once you take this baby on the freeway you WILL want to show it off whenever some ***** revs his engine next to you. Just be responsible, hopefully you have common sense and you'll be fine. This car is a blast and I've caught myself enjoying it a lot, but I don't abuse what I have at my hands. I accelerate when I want to maneuver through traffic, but I don't get crazy. Great choice if you decide to go for it, IMO it's worth the money.

Doh! This is a bit off topic, but I just bought an RX-8.. I'm kinda excited about the rotary. PM about some of problems you've had if you got a min.

If you like the RA get it. Just don't abuse it on the streets think of your life, your loved ones and others around you and be alert.

True Story:

A civic was acting up on one of the main strips in NYC. Two steppin and all that. So I break launch the hell out of my RA and it shot out like a freakin rocket. I passed the civic and slowed down about an 1/8th of a mile after due to some mild traffic ahead. All I see is the civic come flying like a freakin bat a outta hell. I said to myself "I hope he realizes the traffic ahead so I honk my horn (1 solid honk) but sure enough BANG!! the civic slams into a lincoln mercury and spins the hell out of control slams into the divider. (Civic is demolished by now) and I swerved to the other lane to avoid his debris fly all over the place and THAT WAS IT!!!

Civic GONE FOR GOOD. Thank g_d no one got hurt except for minor bruses. After that I was like damn I'm done for the day. I didn't drive for the rest of the day.

So BEWARE the power you use and where you use it.

Quoted for posterity.
I wouldn't go around telling this story because it makes you come across as an idiot as well. You see someone acting in a stupid and aggressive manner so your logical response is to egg them on by launching past them giving them the automotive equivalent of the middle finger. Do you also tell people muttering on the subway that the voices are real?
Edit: It's crap like this that support my belief that young people should not be allowed performance-oriented cars. I would completely support a limitation on what people can drive before they have enough experience to know this kind of behaviour is ****ing retarded and gets innocent bystanders killed.

^Yeah about that.

The tires are not that great. Also the dealer told me 10,000 miles and that would be it. Remember to take this type of maintenance cost into account, along with insurance, scheduled maintenance, etc.
