Change the filter especially if you switch oil types (to/from synthetic).

I change it every time.

This is probably one of the dumbest questions asked on here, but changing the oil and filter on my own will not void my warranty, correct?

Changing your oil yourself should not void any warranty. Just make sure you keep receipts for every change. So if they try to void your warranty at least you have proof you have taken proper care of the car.

Yep I've heard about keeping your receipts because of that. On topic, I change it out every 3k miles

I have a friend who owns an outlander, and he always does his own oil changes. He keeps the receipt for the oil and filter, and a record of KM's driven. When time came for some warranty work, Mitsubishi had no problem honouring him.

As far as oil changes go, I use OEM filter and Mobil 1 Synthetic, as per the owner's manual. I change following the "Severe Service Schedule" because of the "harsh Canadian climate" so I change every 4800km or something. I always let them do it, only costs me $30 or so (I bring in the oil and filter because they are Satan when it comes to charging for those); I don't have to dispose of the oil, and then they have a paper trail/electronic record of serice.

95% of the time, yes, it's a sham. if something internal has failed and there is potential for metal debris in the runners it's worth it, if there was a major gasket or component failure and the galleys were contaminated badly by coolant or something, sure it's a good idea; but for dirty oil, no way

color of oil has little to do with its integrity

Telling a customer that oil is no longer effective simply because it looks black is just wrong. Our Subie dealer tried to tell my wife that the oil in our 07 outback was no good b/c it was dark. I change the oil regularly (evry 5k) and use Mobil 1. They had no record of oil chgs so assumed it was never done.

She said my husband changes it and they guy told her I wasn't doing a very good job. She laughed and said he would let me know....

NO one can determine oil integrity just by looking at it. Just change it regularly and more frequently if you drive hard. Use a good synthetic and change the filter.
