The lower octane map is only sort of what you believe it is. There is no octane sensor. The octane number that the car uses starts at xxx and decreases depending on how much knock you get. It then uses that number to interpolate a difference between the high and low octane map...

Just run the recommended grade of fuel...

your manual says that you can run 87 octane for emergencies only, say you pull up to a gas station and they only have 87 or 89, put few gallons of 89 in it and drive to another station that has 93 octane or higher..
