I always though that the only difference in gear ratios between the X MR and the RA was the 5th gear that in the case of the RA is a bit longer than in the EVO for fuel economy purposes.

I remember reading that info in some review of a popular car magazine a few years ago.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I guess this would also help the Ralliart zip around town and also give more top end to the Evo?
From mitsubishi Canada website:

Gear ratios for Ralliart:
5th: 0.983
6th: 0.731

Gear ratios for the EVO X MR:
5th: 1.008
6th: 0.775

And they both share the same final drive ration. The reason for that is that the Ralliart is more aimed as a daily driver, so 5th and 6th are geared toward fuel economy (keeps the RPM low in higher gear). The gear ratios of the EVO X are more like track cars where you want you gear to be closer to better exploit your powerband.

This is not necessarily to match the turbo. Usually you try to set your gears so that they allow you to be in the sweet spot of your power band when you need it.

With the setup we have on the Ralliart, we end up staying in 4th gear much longer than the EVO. Otherwise, you'll end up shifting to a pretty low RPM when you get in 5th.

Hope this helps a little.

In theory, but the question is do we run out of gearing or power first to reach the top speed.

First thats Awesome OP, I wish I was closer to Syria to take a shotgun ride in your car. But I feel its great news to RA owners that a direct swap of the MR SST is an easy plug and play affair. Thats A+. I personally feel you don't need to worry. But I guess a tune wouldn't hurt.

Re: Top Speed no I would venture to say that the gearing power is there from being sitting a RA that ran up to 135mph in a closed course and was hovering at around 5500~ish RPM, I would say the RA hits 140mph+ easy on a level road and probably more given you can hit 6994 RPM (anything under 7000 is ok with the ECU) 6th gear is pretty strong. the car does pull it.

The RA is geared to run to 167 MPH at 6500 RPM and 180 at 7000. Something tells me you won't get to either unless you are making significantly more power than stock. Top speed is definitely drag limited (disregarding electronic limits of course).

I can't imagine trying to slow down from either of those speeds with the factory brakes. I ran up to 120 once and had brake fade instantly even barely touching the brakes

then upgrade the brakes!

it really depends how fast you want to stop, too. If you are just going to let off the gas and coast down to cruising speed, or lightly tap the brakes, you should be fine. But if you want something more then by all means upgrade the brakes and pads and rotors and tires and suspension, too.

Personally, I like stock brakes on the RA and think they are awesome, but if ever I feel them giving up on me, I will most definitely change them / upgade them. But 1st im going to try upgrading the pads

I didn't get it.... I'm happy w/ the OEM brakes and will change them out for more OEMs, down the line, they have lasted me 36k miles (the brakes) with no problems. thanks anyway.

I don't know how the poster above got brake fade by just stepping on the brakes at 120 ... thats never happened to my car and actually I think the brakes are quite decent other than for track racing. But one thing I did forget is you may want to change your brake fluid to Motul because that will also help. Motul brake fluid doesn't boil over, like the typical OEM stuff.

Either way , lets stick to the topic
