Well from what I understand, black smoke is just unburned fuel, usually from running a little rich. Nothing to be alarmed about... A tune would fix it if it bothers you.

No perfectly fine, just bad gas mileage and bad for the environment

Actually the black smoke could be due to the new exhaust you got put in. When i put a borla exhaust w/ xpipe on my vette it smoked for maybe a week or 2. I was told at the time it is due to the residue or oils in the piping. So it should work its way out. Also it could be due to running rich. But if it just started with the new exhaust, I am def leaning towards it will go away....

I have the cp-e exhaust and black smoke still shoots out 15,000 miles later. I don't think it will go away until the car is tuned.

It's my understanding that because the multiple computers on this car are very sensitive, whenever any performance mod is added a tune must be done in order for everything to work properly. You might want to head to the nearest performance shop and have them tune your computer for the new exhaust.

Probably both. The car runs rich on stock tune but more so the oils from production are burning off.

My Protege5 runs pig-rich at WOT - but you don't 'see' black smoke. I just have excess carbon on the intake manifold and EGR that i have to seafoam once every 30K miles...

I can tell it runs rich, I only have about 1k on the clock and the very tip of the exhaust finishers are black.

I'm going to be doing the GST basemap flash here soon, that should help.

If you buy an Exhaust and dont have your car tuned, you are going to see black smoke when you get on the gas. It is the stock tune from the factory that is running the car rich as a safety precaution.

If you see White Smoke, that is when you need to start worrying.
