Hot Fog Lights with HID?

Yesterday I installed my HID kit into my fog lights and after a quick 10-15 drive the fog lights were very hot. Touching the lens didnt burn my finger but it wasnt something I wanted to have my finger on very long. I never did this with the stock lights so I dont know if they are always that hot.

I bought a 55w HID kit because thats the wattage of the stock bulbs but now Im thinking I should have bought the 35w ones.

Do the fogs get this hot normally?

My normal bulbs get very hot, I think you'll be fine. If u leave them on for long during a trip just see if the lens is burnt- if it is then it's too hot and may melt your wiring

Thanks for the info. Any idea what melts first the lens or the wiring?

Depends on how far the bulb sits from the lens. I installed 35w on my old subie, and cracked the lens' in 5 mins, but there's are plastic not glass.

The bulb sit a lot closer than the stock bulbs do. I ran them tonight for a little longer and Ill check in the morning what the lens looks like.

i have hyperyellows and they are borderline finger burn. both my lens cracked shortly after installation, and i think its from the super hot to super cold massachusetts mornings. pretty sure our lens are ****ty plastic, not glass

They probably do get hot, but 55W HID is overkill! The beauty of HID is their efficiency...and a 35W HID puts out as much light as a 55W or higher Halogen bulb. Heck, the stock HID headlights on the Ralliart are only 35W!! Your 55W HID is something typically equipped on aircraft landing lights!! LOL
