Use engine degreaser on everything. Avoid silicone cleaners because they attract more dirt.

I use Power purple or simple green both diluted by half, an old dish sponge for easy wipe downs and plenty of H2O. To repeal dirt i use Formula 2001 shine stuff wiped on the plastics and hoses and the dirt just kind goes away from there. Been using on allot of cars that I've detailed and they've all come out great.

I wrap up the electricals with saran wrap then mist down the engine bay with the hose. Spray degreaser, scrub, rinse, then remove the saran wrap and drive.

I tend to spray the electronics with Boeshield T-9 before wrapping them (WD-40 also works). Both are hydrophobic and are meant to repeal water in the long run.

Run a quick search of the detailing forum. Seriously. I've written a bit about this, including specifics, as have others. Good luck.

Wand wash

I just took my car to a wand wash, opened up the hood, and sprayed away! Soap and a rinse. Didn't bother with a wax....
