Winter tires on the RA

I put on the winter setup Friday evening. They are 17"x7" (46mm back spacing) Mitsu 2G 2 piece Enkie wheels (brand new-won at IL MOD 2009) and on them I mounted new 205/50/17 General Altimax Artic's.

These tires feel like I am driving on sponges. They are not noisy but very sloppy.

The car feels like it rolls sideways even with very slow entry speeds. And forget about accelerating out of the corner.

Do all winter tires feel this way?

Yup. You can improve it a bit by going with a wider tire as long as it fits your rim. I am running 235/45/17's on 17 x 8 stock EVO VIII rims myself. Not too bad on the lateral grip.... but it is a softer ride and not as "crisp" on handling.

I wanted a narrower tire because of snow/slush traction but I was not expecting that much "slop".

Yeah...lots of "slop" with narrow winter tires. I noticed this immediately when I swapped to 205/60/16s.

But they'll be a blast in deep snow...!!! Get your snowplow mode on .

Yeah, the wifey wont let me do "fun" things in her 07 Outlander AWD XLS and my 92 Galant VR4 has not even seen rain in 3 years. (you can see her under blankets behind the RA)

So I sold my boring Saturn DD and bought a DD that I want to drive.

I just hope that the front lip is high enough to stay in one piece.

a wider tire for reference is better on ice, but the skinny tire is better for snow.

High enough to clear cement parking blocks...it'll be fine

Wow, That must have been scary.

Ever since I had my 30th Anniversary Corvette back 5 years ago, I got real good and not pulling to far up in lots.

Lol. I was worried for a second, but when I saw that there was still a good 1/4"-ish clearing...I wasn't too worried .

Keith
If 235/45's fit with the stock Enkei's, I wonder if 17x9's that used to ride on my Evo VIII would fit (with the 235/45 tires mounted)??

Weds SA70's with a 35mm offset and 17x9??
