Ralliart tire sizing

Hi all-

I'm hoping to buy a new Ralliart in the coming months. The one complaint i see in reviews concerns the tires. In the US, the Advan A10's are not regarded highly, and here in Canada the Dunlop SP5000's are crap. Both these are supported by ratings on Tirerack.com.

So, i'm thinking i may finagle something with the dealership, and get them to put on some different tires.

Standard Ralliart tires are 215/45R18's. But apparently, i could also fit 225/40R19's. At least, that's what Tirerack.com says. Why would i need the 19's, as opposed to a 225/45R18 (which are not listed as compatable by Tirerack)?

I know only a small amount about tire sizing, so i'm hoping someone can explain this. Thanks!

225/45/18
235/40/18
245/40/18
all fit with +/- 2% in overall diameter.

I'm not doubting you, but i'm curious why Tirerack only shows the 225/40R19's as being compatible. It doesn't seem to think the 225/45R18's would fit. Why that i don't know.

use this ... set 215/45/18 as "OEM" size on the left and see the list of "compatible tires" in the table below...

when u want to buy a different size of tires... u need to compare the overall diameter to your OEM one (215/45/18) so ur speedo reading is not off..

what tirerack shows u is what THEY recommend u installing .. most likely they will filter all the rims with offset calculated close to OEM style also.. I guess the reason is they want their customers to choose the right tire/rim setup which they know it wont have issue.. its normal that they dun want u to recommend u something super aggressive which u might need to roll fender or etc etc..

Aren't 215 tires ~8.4 inches wide? Our rims are only 7 inches. Am I missing something? How would fitting wider tires help when we already don't get the full proper width with stock tires? Wouldn't the issue be wider rims, not wider tires?

Golyadkin- i think Ralliart rims are 7.5 inches, maybe 8. But i could be wrong.

initial_d2k: That's a neat little app. Thanks for the link.

Interesting how a 225 has a slightly larger diameter over a 215, even though all the other specs are the same.

The 225/40R19 is bigger still, so not sure why Tirerack recommends it over the 45R18. Weird. But certainly looks like i won't have trouble with either.

Some 215 tires have a narrower section width, some have a wider section width. Some 215 tires have a narrower tread width than 215mm, some have a wider tread width than 215mm. These parameters differ by manufacturer.

I don't understand why you feel we don't get 100% of tread width on the pavement, given the tire and rim are both within spec? A tire's section width does not dictate tread width or contact patch size, manufacturing determines these. Also if within spec, rim width should not impact tread contact patch size. Adding wider rims(that are still within spec of Advan 215) tires will have little effect to contact patch, until you are wider than spec, then undesireable effects may result.

As long as the wider tire is specced to fit an RA-width rim, it should perform as advertised.

Scarborough and Maple Mitsubishi Support the Conti Extreme Contact DWS and Extreme Contact DW tire. if you know your going to drive your car in the snow, then go with the DWS, if its pure spring and summer weather go with the DW. Honestly, I had a chance to drive both tires at the limit and both perform exceptionally well.

Both Dealerships support wider tires, 19's you might have issues with, but 18s, you can go 225 45 18 no problem.

About your original post, I have no clue why Mitsu stuck with Dunlops SP 5000's for their tire. hense why the reviews were not so good. Its a stiff ride and if anyone drives it more then 20,000 km, the tread is dead.

anyways good hunting, let me know if you need help with the tires.

Cheers

Look at a tire, the tread width is not the same as the width of the inner ridges that actually hold the tire to the wheel. As long as you aren't going with too large or too small of a tire on a given wheel, you're tread contact area is more or less the same as you would expect based on the tire specifications (ie. a 225 will have a larger contact area that a 215 or a 205).
If you're going to buy tires, spend some time figuring out what you want to do with the car. If you just want something better than stock but not crazy, the tires Evo_soul recommended could work and sound like a decent upgrade for the money. If you want something better, the Dunlop Star Specs, Bridgestone RE11s, etc. are the best you can get without stepping up to R-comps. They are pretty extreme for pure street use though.

Yeah the Star Specs are pretty wide for their size, a 225 is close to a 235 in other tires.

Amby, do u happen to know if Hankooks usually run a little wider or narrower? Specifically the Ventus V12?

I haven't heard anything specific about Hankooks running wide for their size so I'd guess they're more true to their sizes. The Star Specs seem to be one of the few tires that I can think of that does this to a pretty noticeable extent.
