I agree as far as internal mods or huge boost goes a pro tune is required. However I think if you go with basic bolt ons from say one company (AMS for example) like cold air, exhaust, downpipe, blow off etc that they have the experiance with these combos to get you pretty close (and safe) till you can get the time to take it to a place to get it tuned exactly.

Though even AMS warns against using the base map with an aftermarket intake.
This flash cannot be used with any aftermarket parts aside from a cat-back exhaust. If an intake or further modification is used with this flash serious engine damage can occur.

They have stage one and stage two
stage one is the basic no intake
stage two is the basic w/ intake
Both will take exhaust.
Custom tune is only worth it once ur done with all ur bolt ons. ie. FMIC, BOV, SRI, Cat back, Etc...

I agree with this. If you're going all out with bolt ons you want the most out of what you put on, so custom tune. If you plan on only doing a couple things, ie base flash alone, or adding an intake or something, I think it makes more sense to go mail in, especially (as has been said) if your getting your parts, flash from the same source (ie. AMS)

Ah, that wasn't clear on their site. I know Cobb offers off-the-shelf (OTS) maps (not for our Ralliarts yet), and their OTSs can get very detailed, even down to specific manufacturer exhausts, intakes, intercoolers, etc.

Thanks for all the imput guys, I think I am going to go with the AMS reflash and boost pill and cable to begin with and tune as I mod. Not going crazy with the car as it is my daily driver.

you send them your ecu, they reprogram it, and send it back along with a new boost pill. You install both the boost pill and reprogrammed ecu and profit from 50 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque extra.

What are the downsides to doing this? (other than voiding the warrenty). Is it just that the RA is detuned and the flash gives us a really nice boost? Or will this cause any other issues down the road?

pretty much, mitsubishi did a crappy job of tuning the RA. I think mitsubishi did that on purpose to prevent the RA from approaching evo territory. But don't forget that the reflash is supposed to be used with the boost pill, so your running higher boost too (hence more power). Keep in mind I haven't looked at the stock tune or the ams one so I don't know exactly what they changed.

Does the reflash help with the fuel economy any. I know its not the intention, just curious.

Yes it does, assuming you drive it the same as you did before the flash, you will get better fuel economy (downside is it's more fun to press the gas harder, thus more tempting) I find I get 20-25ish more miles/tank.
