Tuning RA - High/Low Octane Maps

I know for tuning the RA there are both high and low octane fuel maps (My cable is in the mail as I speak). Now I read in another thread that you should not modify the low octane map, for good reason such as if you were to get a bad tank of gas. What does the ECU consider "High" octane and "Low" octane?

the "low octane" map is really just a map the ECU uses when the higher "octane map" can't manage knock sufficiently. I wouldn't say any of the maps refer to a specific octane, though.

^ precisely. as long as it's not knocking, it'll use the high octane map.

the ecu does not know what the octane rating is of the fuel being used.

it "looks" for knock and make the nessesary adjustments.

mostly to timing.
