picture of sst transmission filter location

does anyone have a pic of the transmission showing where the filter is located? i searched the forums and google but did not come up with anything. i have my changed my fluid once already but i am going to change my fluid again now and i would like to change the filter too especially because i will be putting an fp green on my car in a couple months. any pictures would be great thanks!

I don't have a picture, but when you remove the plastic underpan, it's the cylindrical black thing near the front bumper, driver side.

Number 7 is the black housing. The filter that you will be changing is inside of it. It is number 8 in this diagram:

I recently purchased the SST inline reusable tranny filter from SSP. Do I need to drain the fluid to replace the filter, or can I just swap them out, and do the fluid later? Car only has 5,750 miles, seems a little too soon to do the tranny fluid already (especially at ~$400); although I do want to get the new filter in there so as to help preserve the unit by getting the metallic pieces from the "break-in period" out of there.

^ You don't have to replace all of the fluid, but you will lose some when you do the swap. Just keep track of what comes out and refill as needed.

if you remove the driver's side wheel well inner splash shield and look up, it'll be staring you in the face. if you order the part from the dealer, it comes as an assembly with the filter, housing, and a new o-ring (#'s 7 and 8 in the pic)

Alright thanks guys i already ordered my filter from mitsubishi parts.net i feel like an idiot for waiting this long to change my filter i usually change all my maintenance stuff on time, but the dealer said that the sst did not have a filter and then i totally forgot to get on here and find out for sure if we had a filter. I hope i did not ruin anything by waiting this long. This was a bad idea to wait this long especially for preventive maintenance on such an expensive item, but my transmission still shifts amgazing and flawless evertyime and i changed my fluid around 30k.

Some... is some like a single liter will be enough? Sorry but out of 8 liters, "some" could be any amount less than 4... Kinda want to know how much I need to order

1 liter should be plenty. get yourself a decent pair of clamping hose pliers and make sure you pinch off the line you're going to use, then when you disconnect from the cooler, wrap a balloon around the nipple and use a rubber band to hold it in place. install the inline filter to the end of the line you have pinched off and removed, install the new hose extension onto the other end of the filter, and then right before you reconnect to the cooler, squeeze the balloon to get most of the fluid that went into it back into the cooler, yank it off and reconnect your new hose segment to the cooler nipple and re-secure everything. remove the clamping pliers from the line and you may have lost a total of an ounce or two at the worst, just try to catch any that does come out in a pan and use that to determine how much to add back in, plus remember there needs to be a little bit more for the new filter housing (though the pics make the actual size of the filter not entirely clear so my measurements may be a bit off) and the extended line as well, so you might be adding, at most, a pint of fluid back into the system once all is said and done.

^Oh wow, that makes more sense. I just got the filter in the mail today and I see that it is double ended. So the filter goes in-between the tranny and the cooler? That might be perfect, I actually bought an upgraded Mishimoto tranny cooler with a fan built in (it was a great price, and a good investment for the preservation of this $10K unit, from what I've heard anyways, haha). Haven't had a chance to get inside the fender well and take a look as of yet, but I might just plan on doing the entire swap all together then!!

Don't mean to steal the tread. I have the same question as "sstevojr". Where should the SSP inline filter be installed and how? Do we still need to replace the filter every time we change the SST trans oil? Thanks.

easiest way is you will be installing it along the hose between the transmission and the tranny cooler. if you are getting the ssp variant, you don't need to replace it every time, as it is reusable, you would just open up the canister and clean the internal element, i presume, although i have yet to see one of these in person, as mentioned earlier

^yes, it has an internal filter, much like a metal/gold coffee filter, but rolled into a snow cone paper cup shape (cylindrical pyramid)
