So, i've messed around with this concept as well recently. Except, I found that on my commutes, my steady state loads go as high as 80-90 (thanks to the mountain I live on). In addition to the high timing advance in the low load cruise zones (2500 - 3500 RPM under 60 load), I'm running stock timing @ 80 - 90 load in that RPM band, and blended the timing table between 60 and 80 and between 90 and 140. I then made a few 2-3-4 acceleration runs and 4th gear pulls to make sure I didn't add any detrimental knock and pulled some timing where it was necessary.

These changes coupled with my alterations to the boost/load and WGDC tables to make 0 boost @ 20% throttle and lower, have given me my best commuter MPGs thus far. I'm currently at 210 miles on my current tank and still have about 1/4 tank left. My last tank of gas I eeked out 270 miles on 12 gallons. That's not the best in the world, I'll admit, but it's better than I've seen in a while. Of course, the MPGs I've achieved so far include on ramp stomps up to the speed limit

I would be happy to chip in money for the development of econo base maps like the GST Basemaps. It'd be a lot of work getting 2009,2010,2011 maps made, but ~$50 from 20 people per year interested makes for a good start.

When stock and really trying to behave, I could barely squeeze 22mpg out of my car. With the GST base map i avg 20ish mostly hwy. My buddy consistently gets 33mpg from his stage 2 A3 2.0t Quattro. Direct injection can't be to blae for 10+ mpg can it???

Updating my results with eco timing. I've just completed a cross country trip to FL and back (back to Cali) that looped though Colorado. I ~averaged~ 320 miles on 12 gallons of gas @ freeway speeds that varied between 72.5 and 75 MPH. That puts my highway MPGs at roughly 26 to 27MPGs... Better than OEM claims. Not as good as Audi, but it makes me happy none the less.

One thing I will note about the timing changes I made is that because the SST transmission puts the RA's cruise RPMs lower than the EvoX GSR, I tweaked it so the "cruise" timing went from 2500RPM to 3500RPM. That made the timing advance changes cover cruising speeds of about 65PMH to 80PMH.

As far as im concerned, 27 mpg is a massive improvement. More than respectable for a performance car. Im going to use your spread as a base and report back. Thanks for that.

Be very careful at that 80-100 area. With that big a swing in timing you will get knock when you let off the throttle. I had a nearly identical timing map in that area, and in the past 2 weeks have been getting a LOT of knock at 2500-3000 when cruising. Basically I accelerate to speed, and then ease back on the throttle to maintain; this drops my load to 60-80; if you look at that part of you map it ramps up from 30* to 42*. So I had to smooth mine out a bit more.
It's not the accelerating causing the knock, it's the easing off the throttle bit
Rob you use Tephra yeah? What is your knock light set to load wise? I know most people only care about 140+ load knock, but with the beating I give her on the track I try to be nice to my bearings DD. Food for thought..... oh and welcome back

Thanks for the welcome backs :P

No, I don't have the Tephra Mod... not yet anyway...

I have my knock light to trigger at any load. For counts under 3 it's green, 4 to 7 it's yellow, 8 and up red. So far, with this timing map and the afr map that I'm running I don't get any knock unless i go from WOT to full throttle lift ( e.g. like at the end of a run ). This is even when I went through parts of super rural SW Texas and New Mexico where they only had 90 Oct for their "premium" fuel.

I'm also always concerned about knock, so i don't limit it to any load ranges.
