We had this one
It looks like this would work, too, though I haven't seen this variant in-person
M.U.T. III generally refers to the standalone, black unit that connects to the OBD port and can perform most basic functions. The big computer station and the handheld unit are additional interfaces required for more complex interaction.

When its plugged in it seems to check what the ECU part # and Rom ID is and then either tell you if the map it (mutIII) has is the same or if there is an update to be done.
So like new maps for the 2008 evo's that include the clutch teach in function. If you plug it into a 08 evo, it'll say i have new software that matches that vehicle ID.
Plug it into a newer model and it'll say reprogram not necessary since it already has the upgrade/same data.
So either Mits have released new data for ralliarts which makes sense to include the teach functions but odd that theyd also decide to unleash super sport, or someone is able to make the MUT III think its plugged into an Evo.
In which case it'll see that the "evo" doesnt have the same map and tell you to upgrade.
It would be interesting to see if the RA's with super sport now have ROM id's that match evo's
I believe some RA's are already running around flashed with Evo x roms to utilize the tephra mods.

But it kinda makes sense that at least all the code for working out fuelling and boost etc would all be all looking in the right places. But if any other system (tcu) looked for data in the ecu at the original RA location... Kaboom. Which is why i've never tried it.
Maybe same year, same domestic market, mitsui kept the code/interface between the ecu and the rest of the car the same?
Makes more sense that the ecu would receive a request for data, it would then get the data from where it knows it's stored via its own routine, and then pass it to the other system as a copy.
Dunno I could be way off base!
But as for TCU, im interested to see if its new files available for the MUT III to flash onto the car or an actual new function added to the MUT III which gives a "reprogram TCU" menu item.
"• Check the Diag. Version before Teach-in. If the Diag. Version is 0000, reprogram the ECU. (The
software with Diag. Version 0000 does not have Teach-in function.)"
This from the service manual seems to suggest that the Diag. Version is part and parcel with the ECU reprogramming. So Just need to somehow reprogram via Mut III a RA ecu with a recent model EVO X files.
Seems like the dvd with the 2010-2012 update has been ripped and can be found on the net now.

It reads as if the software comes via a Mitsubishi released cd, gets loaded on the laptop, it can then either plug right to the car via the Mut III (VCI) or you can export the data to a sd card so the MUTIII can be used without the laptop. (maybe some sort of special formatting or maybe the laptop can be bypassed all together)

This is where the TCU programming would require the full kit since there is nothing even close to comparable to the yellow folder screen with selectable button/tabs (shown about 1/3 of the way through the video) accessible through using the VCI in standalone mode.

hoblaa, if possible, would you mind sending me a message (or even posting here) the exact process you used to flash the vehicle, which tabs you selected on the MUTIII menu/folder options? I understand you enter into the Reprogramming tab and then select CAN-mode, then I'd imagine you just select the TC-SST module on the left of the screen, click continue, and it displays on the standard flash/update screen, but I just want to be sure. I only ask because I will likely have very limited time with the scantools and would like to be as efficient as possible through this process and avoid any setbacks.

Any word on this Chitown? As far as the steps you use to do this? I have a local mitsu service tech here ready and willing to try. He just wants the actual part # or service bulliten that is used for the specific update. OR if you use certain steps, would you be willing to share?
