ACT clutch, dunno what series... my buddy has the same manufacturer of clutch on his 03 Evo 8 and he has the same issue

I think if you and your friend have the same brand clutch and the same problem, you've answered your own question.

I would make sure your clutch pedal adjustment is as high as it can possibly be without pre-loading the hydraulics. I have driven an ACT equipped car with horrible high rpm lockout that the clutch pedal was adjusted low to make it "feel more like a DSM clutch". I adjusted the pedal back up to the factory height, and the release problem totally went away.

If your still having problems, I would look into a different clutch setup soon or you will be doing a trans rebuild to go along with a new clutch.
