Balance Shaft Del Question
Hey there I am having an issue and was hoping you guys could help me. I recently bought the race balance shaft delete kit and had my mechanic install it.
Here's the issue-
I saw this on the forums and I figured I should ask you guys...
I just had my mechanic do a balance shaft delete using the AMS race balance shaft delete kit. Because the engine was still in the car, (I had him do my 60K service early before I put my FP Black in), you can't remove the front balance shaft. He did do the rear balance shaft.
I took my car out and it sounded like it had an exhaust leak (as described above). Even though I don't have the balance shaft belt on could this be why the car is SO loud now? It seems to happen around 3800 RPM and 6900 RPM.
FWIW, I did have him put an AVID racing motor mount (70A) on the passenger side. I am planning on doing the driver side and rear transmission mount this coming weekend. I have a BLOX motor mount (90A) in the front.
My question is - is it the balance shaft delete? The front balance shaft being out 180 degrees? Or the motor mount (or some mix of all of these). I'm hoping it is just the mount, and if it is, I am going to swap it back out to stock and save them for a rainy day.
Thanks for the help.

Did your mechanic do a timing belt? Is the vibration accompanied by an audibly loud noise, like that of a very raspy exhaust? If it is, you're timing may be on but your oil pump drive/front balance shaft is 180* out of alignment. I've dealt with the same vibration and noise on 2 different cars, both required the same fix. Even if the mark lines up on the oil pump drive pulley it can be out. There is a trick to making sure it is in before you put the timing belt on; Start with the pulley's timing mark at 12 o'clock, then rotate the pulley clockwise to the 9 o'clock position and release it. If the timing mark moves(it's very slight as the shaft is counterbalanced) towards the 6 o'clock, the shaft is 180* out of time. If it moves towards the 12 o'clock position it is in time and you can finish lining up the marks and install the timing belt.

The Race balance shaft is milled down with no counter weights on it so it will not cause any extra vibration if it wasn't lined up properly. Deleting the balance shafts will give a tad more vibrations but nothing crazy. Also by not having the balance belt hooked up it shouldn't cause any exhaust leaks at all. If it was hooked up and was out 180 degrees then it would cause extra vibration.
You might have extra vibration now due to adding the upgraded motor mount. I would check the exhaust and manifold to make sure that you don't have any exhaust leaks anywhere. Also make sure that your timing is properly lined up and check to make sure all the timing marks are correct.

Thanks for the reply Andrew.
I will try changing out the mount this weekend just to see if it changes how it feels.
I will check the exhaust and manifold. I did talk to my mechanic and he said the timing was on and brought up the same points as you. I needed to hear it from AMS.
I appreciate it I'll post back when I make the changes.

From what I'm reading, I have to ask, Did your mechanic put the AMS shaft in the rear balance shaft's place and not touch the front one? Because you DO completely remove the rear, and replace the factory front shaft with the AMS piece. I think your mechanic might be confused.

Yeah, what he said. You can't just remove one balance shaft. What kind of mechanic was working on the car?? The mechanic did nothing but a 60k service without re-installing the balance shaft belt.

As far as front and rear - lets call it closer to the firewall and radiator.
I believe he removed the balance shaft closer to the firewall and replaced it with the AMS balance shaft and left the one closer to the radiator in.
AMS includes Clevite block off bearings if you do remove the front balance shaft. The only reason I didn't was because the motor was still in the car.
I am going to swap the AVID motor out, put the stock one in and take it out for a drive. I am really hoping that this is all it takes to get rid of the awful vibration - the car is very loud right now and as much as I take it to the drag strip I would still like to enjoy driving it on the road.
Wish me luck

I just finished up swapping out the AVID motor mount on the passenger side back to stock just to see how it feels. The crazy loud vibrations are gone - there are slight vibrations but nothing like it was before. I had no idea changing the motor mounts would add so much cabin noise.

You no the mechanic installed nothing from your ams except maybe the plug where the rear balance shaft goes (firewall). You can just take it out but you must spin the bearings to cover the oil feed wholes. The front balance shaft is driven by the oil pump, hence their whole speil on y it's better than a stubby shaft. This one comes with a new bearing, oil is supplied through the balance shaft, much the same way the rod bearings recieve lubrication. I highly doubt the mechanic even removed the front cover, the hardest shaft to eliminate is the rea because of having to reposition the bearings. My guess is you just paid extra to have him leave the balance shaft belt off

I am holding the correct balance shaft in my hands right now according to AMS's website:

I just reread your post and I think he may have installed the ams shaft and just left the rear in with the belt off. If you leave the shaft in there that should block the feed wholes.
