noob question - what is knock/knock sum?

Knock is detonation in the combustion chamber. Knock is commonly caused either by an air/fuel mixture that is too lean (thus hot) and/or high cylinder pressures. The knock sensor is used while tuning to help the tuner see how much timing to add or subtract. So while you dont really need to keep an eye on it unless YOU are tuning your own car (Which, I hope youre not if you dont know what exactly knock is) you don't really need to pay attention to it very much. I believe that up to 3 counts of knock is within an acceptable range, but most tuners tune for 0 knock.

3 counts of knock on one wide open throttle pull is acceptable. Thats where knock is vital to monitor. Knock sensors are extremely sensitive, so if the knock sensor sees a count of knock while youre cruising around town, it could be anything as minor as a big bump in the road or a rock that gets kicked up and hits the block, stuff like that can actually trigger the knock sensor. The only time you need to worry really about knock is at 100% throttle during tuning. Dont worry about it otherwise.
