Review of the world's largest and greatest DSM/EVO Shootout!

This was the absolute best shootout I can ever remember. It was also the largest.

Total specators were 1790
Racers were 158

Total Mitsubishi fans at the race 1948. Kids 12 and under were free and there were a bunch of them too.

There were some concerns before this event with some of the people involved in the internet community not attending that the event may not have a good turn out. I think this year proves beyond a doubt that there is one event for DSM/EVO enthusiasts to attend at this IS that event. It also shows that less attention needs to be paid to the very few negative people that actually exist.

We had a record attendance this year both at our shop for the open house/dyno competition and for the actual Shootout.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The dyno competition was divided into 2 categories this year. Stock Appearing Turbo and Non Stock Appearing Turbo.

The Dyno King for the Stock Appearing Turbo Class was won by:

Tom Powell in his EVO9 with an FP Red and BR build. Tom did his own tuning and was able to lay down 548 whp and 535 ft lbs of torque.

The Dyno King for the Non Stock Appearing Turbo Class was won by:

Nick Andy in his EVO8 with a 67 Ptrim and BR build. 701 whp and 551 ft lbs of torque.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was also some confusion because of a mistake on my part. We waited to dyno the FWD's until the end of the day because the dyno has to be changed over from 2wd to 4wd. When we did this I forgot to re-set the dyno to read for 2wd, which is a calculation based on the weight of the rollers. I dyno'd Daniel Daraiche's FWD Colt and the power came up 725 whp/620 ft lbs. The owners of the car and the crew were amazed and some of them told me it was not possible. I said the dyno doesn't lie, congrats you just won. Later that night I remembered I forgot to check the dyno screen for 2wd. The numbers were very over inflated because of this on the last two cars we dyno'd which were both FWD's. Sorry about the confusion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Q16 field was the overall fastest and by far the largest to date. We had 31 Q16 entries to fit into a 16 car field! There were 3-8 second entries, 10-9 second entries and 3- low 10 second entries. EXCELLENT field of cars.

There were NO 8 second "bracket" cars at this event, no surprise there. While 8 second passes were accomplished by three different entries none of them were able to pull it off more than 1 time. The 3 cars that managed 8 second runs in qualifying were:

#1 Qualifier in the Q16 was Serge Turcotte in his 94 Mirage, he also set the low ET and top MPH for the event qualifying with an 8.59 at 168 mph. Unfortunately he made a mess on the track twice and was not able to win the Q16 due to mechanical failures.

#2 Kevin Kwiatowski in his FWD DSM with an 8.87 at 158 mph, unfortunately his car wasn't able to compete due to a trans failure.

#3 Daniel Buschur in our EVO8 with an 8.96 at 166 mph. For the record, this was the only EVO that ran 8's all day long and it was done on a small FP, HTA67 Ptrim turbo.

Q16 Class winners:

1st place, Jesse Abele, qualified #7 with a 9.34 at 147.
2nd place, Kevin Jewer, qualified #4 with a 9.12 at 153.
**Also congrats to Kevin for running his first 8 second pass.
3rd place, Dan Buschur, qualified #3 with an 8.96 at 166.
3rd place, Jared Early, qualified #9 with an 9.76 at 140.

Thanks to all the Q16 racers this year, it was a VERY exciting and VERY fast class.

DSM Stock Appearing winners:

1st place, Scott Mumford, 1991 Talon, 11.99@114
2nd place, Tony Douglas, 1992 Talon, 12.18@113
3rd place, Ryan Wandas, 1991 Talon, 12.18@120

3rd place, Brian Eisenbrandt, 1997 Eclipse, 12.35@85

2nd place, Chris Boliek, EVO8, 13.25@81
3rd place, David Lowe, 2004 EVO, 11.42@121

2nd place, Eric Nixon, 2005 EVO, 10.39@139
3rd place, Chris Flanery, EVO8, 13.55@106
3rd place, Jeff Oswalt, 2006 EVO, 11.26@111

2nd Place, Chris Wirth, 2008 EVO, 12.94@109
3rd Place, Robin Derrick, 2008 EVO, 14.19@103

Bracket 1 winners:

1st Place, Erik Koeofgen, 1994 Mitsubishi, 12.92@114
2nd Place, Brad Yuronick, 2004 EVO, 12.38@114
3rd Place, Ryan Brueshaber, 11.70@116

Bracket 2 winners:

1st Place, Justin Schroeder, 2004 Lancer, 14.10@88
2nd Place, Gariel Fricad, 13.46@102

Also, thanks to the guys at our shop for busting their butts the last week and putting in the long hours required to pull this event off each year. THANK YOU guys.

It was a pleasure hanging out with so many people this year and putting names with faces.

Raceman, Rolo, Tom @ DI, Junior and Mike from TT, Mike, Chris x2 and Sean from AWDMotorsports, Chris from Mellon, Jestr, mostwanted, the list just truly goes on and on and on. I can't tell you all how much I enjoyed meeting you. I am sure I missed some names but it was a pleasure meeting EVERYONE that took the time to say "hi" to me, I don't think I can think of one exception. It was also nice to have some guys come to me and have the ***** to introduce yourself so we could put names with faces and all see that just because you/I are associated with a certain shop that we aren't douche bags.

I really had a great weekend and really have a hard time putting into words how much I enjoyed it and how greatful I am that the event keeps growing because of all the support from everyone.

Also, because the event did go well the 1-2-3 place finishers from each class were awarded a nice plaque, T-shirt and we paid out $6400 in winnings between the classes, the highest we ever have.

Thanks again everyone for your support, friendship and for attending the event.

Looks like it was a lot of fun. 2 questions for DB or anyone else that would know;
1. Were there any other "stock appearing turbo" evos that dynoed over 500whp?
2. How many evo's dynoed 600whp+?
3. Is Tom that made 548hp/535tq with the RED on evolutionm? (curious about his complete mods)

Thanks again David for putting on a spectacular event. I had a great time seeing everyone and meeting some of the faces on here.

For those that couldn't make it, you certainly missed out, make it a point to attend next year.

It was a fun and laid back day. The lack of big contenders (AMS, Rau, Shep) kept the slower guys in the game longer so im certain it made it more worth it for all the little guys but at the end of the day i wasnt left with a "wow" feeling.

I'll go again next year but the shoot out will never be the same if the big dogs dont start playing again.
