Cool Hiboost Evo X goes 11.729 @ 117.30

So with the night air in the 60's, high pressure, and low humidity I headed out to the local dragstrip at NYIRP.

I wasted a few 1.7x short times with great 1-2 shifts only to mis 3rd and hose the run for mid 12's.

Shifting from 4th to 5th at 7k SUCKS and is only good for low 12's.

I was trying to shift at 7500 but somehow the tranny liked 8000 better.

Then I decided it was time to bump the Limiter to 8200 and I got these times:

11.985 @ 117.50

11.920 @ 116.36

Then I bumped it to 8300 but both times I chickened out and held the rpm's at 8200 while coasting through the traps.

Best MPH:

60': 1.703
1/8: 7.595 @ 89.05
1/4: 11.768 @ 118.67
(+29.62 mph gain with coasting through the traps!)

Best ET:

60': 1.737
1/8: 7.587 @ 90.64
1/4: 11.729 @ 117.30
(coasting through the traps around 8200)

Dyno Sheets and car details thread is here:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...tang-dyno.html

All runs were made with my standard street tune that was 380-386 whp on the STM Mustang Dyno @ 26.5 psi peak boost. I still had some 100 unleaded in there which was alllowing me to run an extra 3 psi at peak torque but sadly in the 6500-8000 rpm range where I was revving the motor, the boost was barely 1 psi more at the same RPM according to my logs. I'm going to play around with different restrictor combos to see if I can reduce some of the taper at the top end before the shootout.

Worst case I can bump the timing where it tapers to take advantage of the 100 unleaded gas, otherwise I'll just run 93 octane pump gas. The real limiting factor is still 4th gear running out of revs. Cosworth Cams with upgraded valve springs would let me rev it to 8500 without being nervous but since they also add some good HP I would be coasting through the traps once again. No lift to shift would knock off at least a tenth of a second from each shift because right now I'm dumping all the boost between each gear according to the logs. A taller final drive would be perfect for this car and allow it to achieve 120 mph traps easily and 124-125 mph with cams. Seems that my 19" tires being .2" shorter diameter is not helping matters either!

4th Gear stats (6500-8200):
Average Boost = 26.0 psi
27.7 psi @ 6500
27.0 psi @ 6800
26.0 psi @ 7250
25.0 psi @ 7600
24.0 psi @ 7900
Average AFR = 11.4
Timing Advance = 14* to 17*

It's all about the gearing!

Great Success! Glad to see you break well into the 11's. You will be -11.5 in no time!

Congrats, Hiboost. I didn't have any luck at the track tonight and the car over powered the stock clutch on the 2nd pass.

You're definitely moving on the back half. For reference, my best 1/8th mile trap in my GSX was 94, but only hit 115 in the 1/4.

We will see, 11.5-11.6 is in the cards with the current setup, but running out of 4th gear is still going to be a major thorn in my side with my slightly smaller diameter tires.

Heh, the stock clutch was swapped out at 3k miles on my car! After trying to launch it with ANY kind of real force I knew the sooner I got it removed, the sooner I would be happy. Luckily the local dealership helped me out on the labor since it was a questionable clutch right off the bat. Maybe I could have limped along until the upgraded turbo but to not be able to launch once in a while within reason would have been too limiting.

I would agree that for not having cams this car is hauling on the top end. Even 5th gear pulls like a train once it's fully engaged, it's just not good for the first few seconds at the end of a quarter mile pull though. Larger turbo Evo X's need a final drive upgrade badly to get more top speed out of 4th gear!

Did you mess with your tire pressures at all?

I noticed about 1-2 mm more center wear so I dropped them from 34 psi down to 32 psi. The funny thing is now when I place a straight edge against the tire I can see about a 1-2mm gap in the center! The tire is also hottest on the inside, almost as hot on the outside, and medium temp in the center so the tread should even out for me over time. Likely I burned away some tread at my last HPDE at Watkins Glen when I had the pressures too high when hot. Overall these tires wear a ton better than stock and the inside edge is holding up very well considering the -2 camber.

So in a nutshell, street pressure worked fine for me.

Great work Chris!

It should be a good battle between you and Buschur's X at the Shootout! Assuming you both are in the same class.

By the way a guy by the name of Jesse from your area and apart of the STM crew posted on our local DSM board to say Hi and that he was going to be in Columbus by mid-week. I assume you know him, your not going to be making the trip with him are you?

Nice runs, Chris. It's good to see the Evo X get the same thorough upgrades and tuning that your 2G did.

If I had the monies to get the cams done now I would be running 11.3-11.4's, 4th gear limitations aside! As it stands it will be my better short times off the line against Buschur's stronger top end power, should still be fun though! Likely there will be quite a few Evo X's there this year and anyone running low 12's or better is definitely in the mix since sleeping at the line or bogging a launch can leave the door wide open!

I'll likely be leaving with the STM crew Saturday morning and check out the Buschur dyno/car show activity in the afternoon and hang out a bit the night before the race. Gotta get that bench racing in over a few beers!

Nice runs, Chris. It's good to see the Evo X get the same thorough upgrades and tuning that your 2G did.

It is treating me very well. It is amazing how far ahead the Evos are compared to DSMs as far as a starting point. My best MPH with the Evo is 116.6 with the stock turbo, stock cams, stock clutch, and running E-85 (12.5 ET since I wasn't launching hard on the stock clutch). My best with the Talon with a lot more mods (including an upgraded turbo) and race gas was 117.9.

Not to mention, ECUFlash is a lot more fun to tune with.
