Tire chain placement for snow

Alright, I'm gonna be going up the mountains tomorrow and it might be snowing to the point where I have to use tire chains. Now this is my first time using them (and I highly doubt I will need them) and I just wanna know where to put them. The manual didn't say which. Do you put them on the drive wheels? I have a rear-wheel drive car, so I suppose that the rear wheels are the place to put them (for the traction). Am I correct?
