Best shifting points?

I was just curious at what RPMs your shifting at for each gear? What is producing the best results? Running the gearing out or do you find shifting a little bit earlier is better?

That's kinda what I thought....

I really want to figure out the optium shift point for each gear though, like as excact as possible.

if you don't wind it out to 7k, in the next gear, you'll drop slightly more than you would at 7k, so I think you want to redline it for the optimal power.

If you can't find an optimum point, just redline it. Like someone said, if you have any mods then the powerband is going to be different and so will the best shift point.

i know the lancer ralliart's HP drops drastically after 6200 rpm. so if you guys drive an RA i'd say shift around then, but like the guy up there said, depends on your mods... dyno it and see for yourself (seems like i should take my own advice tho lol... i never dyno'd my car yet)

if you shift too fast, you're going to loose trap time.

shift high as you can. Usually for the evo, redline to 7300 gets you over the lil dip, and if you're tuned, it'll help you get to the beef of the powerband around 5k

But, if you shift later in a previous gear (more toward red line), wouldn't that put you further ahead in the next gear and give you a little advantage??

Got this topic kicking again? LoL.

Lets assume for a car that is redlines around 7800 (Most people w/flashes are around there)

I totally disagree with just running it out to redline, that can't be the best shift point.

Wheres the guy who ran a 10 with the stock turbo? I bet he has some good advice!

I think it depends where the power band starts to drop off.. maybe have the car dyno'd and have a graph so you can see where it starts to near the drop-off point. Thats where you are supposed to shift.

Here's the problem: people are referring to the paint on the tach as "redline," which begins at 7k. In actuality, your redline is 7600 (unflashed) or 7800-8000 (flashed), so you're talking about 2 different things. I refer to "redline" as the point at which my rev limiter kicks in, which is what you're talking about here.

I believe the optimum shift points are above 7000, but not at the rev limiter. On my 05 without cams, I shift around 7200-7300 in 2nd and 3rd. My 1-2 shift is different, because after the immediate full boost and full load upon launching, my power drops off significantly earlier than when just winding out the gears, so I actually shift a little earlier (6800-6900?). This is all hard to tell exactly, because the launch and 1-2 shift are so violent close together that I can't look at the tach. I just know that I'm not ragging it out past 7k like I do in other gears. My peak hp does hit at like 6500, but it doesn't really start dropping off until after 7k, which makes 7200-7300 good for me...the benefit over shifting at 6500 is that it puts me right in the powerhouse of my next gear. I'm usually already above 5500 in my next gear when I shift, so there is no hesitation in acceleration (6spd helps).

Someone on my setup + cams would potentially shift even later (7400-7500), though, because of the increased powerband. Btw, 00R101 was way off. If you shift at 6k, you will probably lose close to a second in the 1/4-mile.

actually the optimal point of shifting is 6800 rpm on slightly modded evo's.

it'll give you the optimal range of power.

but with cams and bit more high end power with a tune, you shift high as you can. I look at my RSM after the runs, i see 8000rpm.
