T-Case from an Evo IX waiting to go in...

I had posted the other day that I had thought my 6speed had blown on track at an HPDE @ Pocono. Turns out that it looks like it was my transfer case! When it was finally yanked apart, it was clear that the pinion and rings were completely destroyed. The front diff maybe could be saved... but that's for another day.

I was running factory trans fluids, flushed in March. Downpipe can be seen in the pics in the background is wrapped for heat shielding.

After going back this weekend to old pictures and event info, I've done 11 track days on the car, 2 drag passes (when I bought it back in '05)...

...and 600+ autocross runs. Damn. 50+ events, 40+ of them with two drivers.

Car has 21k on the odo. Exedy stg 1 clutch replaced at 17k miles. Running as far as power, just a conservative tune (~300whp) Car has coilovers on it, and runs 275/40/17 V710s on 17x9 wheels. -3.0* neg camber F, -1.2R, 1/8 toe out F, 1/8 out rear.

Broken so far: 1/2 dozen wheel studs, a few lug nuts, clutch, T-case.

On course. White Evo's may be the fastest, but silver is the workhorse

My ACD portion of the T-case....everything looks good....

The other half of the transfer case....looking good...

The LSD....looks good.....but looks can be deceiving...

Here is the top off the LSD....hmm...metal shavings....

And the carnage begins...

its better to burn the **** out the clutch than destroy something.

rev up to 5.5k rev, rev, slowly realase the clutch ones it grabs and car starts to move dump/slip, it takes some practice.

$12,000 in damages from a launch is something I have seen. Trans, trans case, clutch were all broken.

The biggest thing to remember is to not just dump the clutch. You do that, well, you probably shouldnt be driving an Evo or any other AWD car. You slip the clutch, you'll be fine. A clutch is cheaper than your drivetrain. You may burn it a little in pursuit of a good launch (thus shortening its life), but if you ever hope to have a good 60ft at the strip - its necessary.

Bottom line: Don't beat on your clutch if you can't afford to fix it.

Thanks for the photos. I was considering launching the car at the strip (just to see what the times are once) and now I think I simply don't care what the times would be. Maybe I'll just ease her out and go for MPH instead of times.

I agree... my buddy on sunday lauched his IX MR at the track for the first time at 5600rpm and dump it and only got a foot past the line and CRACK SNAP POP.... He could easily get it in gear but... it has a mean grind to all 7 gears. (1-6 plus R). Can't wait to see what it looks like...my advice... Easy does it

that's me. well what happened was that i was asking all the evo owners there at the track at what setting they launch at (tarmac, gravel, or snow) and all of them said snow. so that's what i did. i 2 stepped it and launched and poof. didn't go anywhere after that. also i think that my clutch grabbed so hard that it just broke everything. i'm pretty sure my clutch is fine. but everything else i think is gone.

I don't know the verdict but i know that, you shouldn't be using REDLINE in a stock evo T-case, You should be using Diqueen or dyqueen What ever the stock Fluid is for the mitsu t-case., Redline most likely causes the t-case to shred in millions of peices my .02cents But correct me if i'm wrong
