Rev-Match downshifting
Do you guys blip the throttle once or twice? Random question as i've seen both and tried both, just seems twice is more involved for "speedy" transitions. Although in general twice results in a smoother transition.

If properly done it should only require one blip, however the lenght of the blip or more precisely the load applied on the throttle is going to vary depending on the speed(mph) and the gear(5th-4th/4th-3rd etc).
More speed require more load(longer blip) as well as a lower gear change.
You just need to develop a feel for it, but if it makes anyone sleep better at night, the evo is the best production car I've driven in terms of pedal placement and seat position in relation to the pedals, heel toe downshifts are basically idiot proof in the evo compared to most cars.

matt, you are prolly correct, the two blip thing is left over from driving cars with bad syncros. Blipping with clutch pedal down (1), and in neutral, clutch pedal up (2), the one in neutral is to spin up the trans gear for a smooth gear engagement. The other blip is to spin up the motor to the gear.
modern well designed syncros make it unnecessary to do, but its like wearing a belt and suspenders in a day when most kids rely on I don't know what to keep their pants up.
you know what, I can't tell you how I do it, but I do when ever I can on the road course.

Double clutching is the ONLY WAY TO IMPROVE RELIABILITY OF A GEARBOX WHILE SHIFTING. People have told me before that rev matching saves a tranny but they're wrong because you're still spinning up against the syncros to engage the next gear. Fast downshifts and high rpm differences ruin transmissions. If you have an older Evo, learn to double clutch or just drive like everyone's mom and put in the clutch when you want to slow down.

When it comes down to it, its all preference.
Cheers!
