Downshifting Into 1st

Slightly different question, more mechanical related:

What actually happens when you don't rev match properly as you downshift into first and you get that kind of lunging/stuttering forward and back over and over until it settles?

In other gears it takes one occasion for the synchro to catch up or w/e and then be in gear but it's like it takes multiple attempts for that to happen for first gear.

Hopefully not too bad for the trans lol

I personally wouldnt do that. If you notice, it will whine as well. Your better off throwing it in nuetral and just hitting the brake.

i know, i'm asking what's happening when the car's lunging back and forth - because in other gears it kind of just slows once while the synchro does its thing.. in first it does that multiple times

i do down shift to 1st when i think i need to

This is my first ever AutoX with an evo. Back in the day.
Here you can see i try different apex's and stuff , ones i even get caught with a turbo lag. It was fun to playing with a car. For me really nothing happens if you shift to first.

During an auto-x I downshifted into 1st once, I just happened to get my heel-toe dead on and first went in like butter, I actually surprised myself, lol.

The next run I had a bit more trouble with it. I often hearing that downshifting into 1st isn't a great idea, however it's never been explained to me WHY that's a bad idea. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.

^^ kinda why i made the thread

WHAT is happening when it's doing that lunging forward and back 3 or 4 times and the syncrho's whining etc.. happens when you don't rev match properly.

how come it lunges like that over and over? in other gears it just takes one synchro "wind up" to get the engine rpms up to speed

the question is why aren't you Rev matching?

but good random question about why it feels more jerky then other gears

its probably more wear and tear on your synchros, clutch, and anything else thats engaging withouth rev matching for a smoother transition, always rev match

Just stop doing it LOL. No need to figure out why it's doing it if you just don't do it. To properly do it you need to revmatch it. It's not just with the evo, it's with any car that has a lockout on first which is most cars these days. The only car I have driven with no lockout on 1st is an E36 M3.

So if you can revmatch properly than go for it, it will feel smooth. Otherwise it's going to try and prevent you from engaging 1st at speed. Not really sure what you are trying to achieve though, as 1st gear is pretty much useless aside from starting from a complete stop....

u guys arent reading very carefully.. just the title, skim through some words and put your response

i wouldn't have made an entire new thread about it if it was about "should i" or "how to" go into first
