I wonder which one I am ?

Funniest part was when they did test drive his car on the street. Since it is road raced pretty hard they wanted to double check for knock. The flasher was driving and he said once he got up to 95 in 4th gear he looked over and realized, hey, this guy IS a cop.
Doug

What is the point then ?

If we all know a proper tune must be tested on the road to look for knock anyway how does one properly tune a car while staying off the road

Your message seems conflicted - be safe and tune on a dyno but then go out and test for knock at 95 mph ?

I had one customer we tuned him on the dyno then we did final testing on a road course rental at $1,500 a day to fine tune it

The main trust on 91 octane especially is that with reflash tuning 90% of the effort is at locating the knock threshold and tuning around detonation. This is where knowing the loading on a particuylar dyno vs the road is key in getting an accuarte measurement of when the car will knock. Throw in how air flow effects the car and tempurature variations in a hot climate and you realize just how futile tuning on a dyno is.

On 91 octane the main issue for myself is at what timing and a/f the car starts to knock and knowing how much of a margin of error is needed to make the car reliable and safe as a daily driver given variations in one tank of gas to another and climatic changes.

Dyno numbers are great but mean very little without all the other details to assist you in knowing what they mean.

What good is making say 375 whp only to leave the dyno and see that your ecu is pulling ignition timing due to knock as soon as you get on it on the highway?

Would you rather have 350 whp and not have any trace of knock or ecu pulling timing ?

What is the goal in dyno tuning ? Is everyone trying to set the car to make the most possible WHP ? It almost seems as though many of the customers want to get dyno tuned for this very reason.

The bottom line as any good tuner will tell you is that both the dyno and road can be used to do a great tune with the right equipment and experience.

The fastest cars at tracks I have tuned never have seen dynos - including Most Wanted in FL who went 11.63 on Buschur Stage II and my reflash and my own 9.98 GT35 Evo 8 which is the fastest GT35 R Evo ever to date.

I personally prefer the road over a stange dyno, although in my home town I work on a dyno jet dyno every day (yet test each car on the highway after every tune). Since I am very familar with my own home dyno I can guarantee a great result when usuing it

Using strange dynos becomes more of a challenge

The last weekend in AZ the mustang dyno there was not even loading cars close enough to realize full boost on the dyno - totally useless for accurate tuning

One car could only make 10 psi on the dyno yet was making 20 psi on the road with no adjustments just going off the dyno and onto the road

He trains the officers how to drive up at the speedway course. And got this STI new for road course and lapping sessions. Has an FP green, FMIC, exhaust, fuel system and U-tec. Made decent power for 91 gas. We had an interesting discussion about imports. The police out here. This guy is in his early 50's too. All of the police departments out here are making a concerted effort to crack down on the import racers, ricers and wanna be's. Although he admits most of the wrecks are attributed to cell phones and people overdriving their SUV's to unsafe speeds, and trying to manuever. The wake left behind by a car speeding through traffic at 100 mph really confuses the average driver. Thats when deadly mistakes take place.
Least he gave me his card and cell phone number if I ever need any help. Be safe out there guys. Insurance rates are already high enough on these cars.
Dude! Seriously chill out. You're not the one driving the car so calm down with all this.

Also, California is at least a hundred times worse then here. A cop there will just look at your car and tow it at will. Nevada is way more laid back no matter what you heard.

And, Saturday morning on the 95 is not bad at all. You might be thinking of the 15 with everyone coming in from California. I'm pretty sure you knew that Al was gonna do road tunes so I don't know why you're giving **** now?

Make sure you have the car boost leak tested with 25 psi

What is the altitude in LV ?

I will be sure to test it @25psi. I'm getting ready to leave my house and do the leak test. Altitude in Vegas is supposed to be around 2200-2300ft. The altitude definitely affected my car after getting tuned in Phoenix. My idle went to crap as soon as I got into town, so that's another reason why I want to get tuned again.
