Fuel Filter

I'm getting ready to switch to E85 on my next tank. I've read that it is recommended to install a better fuel filter. Which filters are you guys using? Are there people who aren't running a better one?

I think a better fuel filter would be a good idea on any EVO, gas or E85.

However, I'm not running a secondary filter. FWIW.

I know of some people running an inline fuel filter from Jeg's. (Mounted before fuel rail)

So it's not one of the requirements to install one?

46K/3yrs on E85 with only the typical symtoms. Tar like residue at the end of injectors, which would accure no matter what filter is used. Replace filter at the beginning of the year after 2-1/2 years use, and was in good shape. Yellowish but fully intact with no deterioration.

What filter did you replace it with?

That definitely looks like a very good $85 filter.

I simply have not been hearing a lot of reports about actual issues resulting from NOT running a supplemental filter with E85. If I was hearing a lot of such reports, I would have a filter.

I'd say if you are the type of EVO owner that has head studs then a fuel filter would naturally be a good fit for your ownership style.

Jim with no filter and no head studs.

Alright, I know you've run E85 for a while, Jim. I'm going to be filling up some containers today and tuning in my garage. Hopefully I can get the car started up and running well.

Pardon my ignorance, where do you install such a filter?

Ahhhh, fuel line? OK, just kidding.

Oddly enough everyone seems to think it should go in the return line. That would be the easiest place for it I suppose. It would seem to me the best place would be in the fuel suppply line as close to the pump as possible.

But don't listen to me, I don't even have a filter...

You'll be fine. You're tuned on gasoline with your current injectors, correct? If so, just set your scaling for 30% more flow and you should be able to simply start 'er up and drive off on your gasoline map.

Do I also need to modify the cranking tables?

My suggestion is to always make only the minimal changes necessary for your car to run the way you want it to run. I assume you are referring to the cold cranking issue. Won't be a problem this time of year. Get it running on E85 and sort out any issues as/if they arise.

Thanks Jim, it fired right up with no hesitation today, just buy dropping the injector scaling 30%.
