What mrfred said. Mivec is more for spool, torque and midrange. Whoever is gaining significant top end horsepower is starting with a jacked up map.

top end can be had with control of the exhaust cam in combination with the intake cam like on the X and STIs.

Given that this is a Evo 1-9 forum area....

yes some gains can be had with an adjustable exhaust gear but I'm sure not many people are doing that here.

i know i just wanted people to understand that some forms of VVT can help with top end.

I played around (went negative) with exhaust cams on some HKS280s on an VIII and didnt see any gains, only losses. If the cams are properly engineered the cam gears shouldnt need to be used. That being said on my 4G64 I have to have an exhaust cam gear because of the increased deck height so I will have a reason to mess around with them. I dont want to sound like you wont find gains, I have never combined with a IX and MIVEC before. One thing about messing with the exhaust cam is you are also altering the ECU timing reference when you do that.

I found about 5-10whp on a Evo 9 with an adjustable exh cam at -2

Next one didn't gain anything, the one after that about 3-5whp

Or does it not quit?

MIVEC never "quits", it's always working. There are no significant increases of power by adding timing at the higher portions of the maps, rather you want to aim to zero out.

I understood increasing mivec timing above 6k rpms as helping to hold power to redline in some cases, even though it doesn't "increase" power.
