Does this look bad?

Hi

I've just done a 3rd gear WOT log and it seems lick my stock E8 MR is knocking quite a lot. Is this as bad as it seems to me - I'm a total newbie and would have thought the stock ROM would be very safe/good but to me it looks bad.

yes it's not good. but are these stock ecu's or are they modified after they leave mitsubishi? can you log timing and let us see that also? what are you using to log with ecu flash I assume?

i think its ok its probally normal engine noises, one of the guys at apex-i said on the safc-II anything over 60 you should worry about and your way below that.

I think it's a little strange how you start seeing knock at 2800 rpm.
And you also go to almost 7500?

Isn't the maximun knock count on evoscan 36?

Max is 36. The 21 and 10 at the end are the rev limiter. The knock sum is not comparable with Apexi products.

Boony, we also need to see ignition timing and octane number at least.

The knock sums aren't terribly alarming if the octane number is half decent. The ECU is doing its job and you can improve all this when you get your wideband, fuel pump and exhaust and being tuning.

Hi thanks for answers.

I logged the data with MalibuJack's mitsubishi logger. I've attached the full log. So a knock count of 9 is ok then?

cheers all,
Boon

I've looked at your log. The ECU appears to be doing its job. Your knock sums are a little on the high side but I don't believe that your engine is being harmed. The octane number goes down a little, this isn't dramatically different from some other logs of JDM ECU cars running on UK fuel like yours is. The JDM ROMs run considerably more timing than the US ROMs.

I prefer to keep the knock sum below 4. When you tune your car you'll be improving things.

fwiw, my stock '05 GSR had a fair amount of knock. Up to 10 counts at 7k. It wasn't as consistent as yours. Some knock around spoolup, then it usually degraded and came back in after 5500.

And that's on Sunoco 94.

I decided I didn't like that and got an eflash to clean things up. Much better now.

I ran your log in DLL and this is what it shows. Since your car is stock, the only thing I can think of is bad gas. Here in CA, gas blends are switched this time of year. And in some cases it makes cars knock more than before. Perhaps you have the same thing happening in the UK.

Unless you have been to make your AFR the same in 3rd and 4th gear (something that I have yet to figure out how to do), your afr in 4th gear would be lower than in 3rd gear. So logically, you should have less knock and not more.

Those of us who have not figured how to make the AFR the same regardless of gear, tune in 3rd gear. My car is currently tuned to run @ an average of 11.5:1 in 3rd gear. If I tune it to run the same AFR in 4th gear, then my 3rd gear AFR would be @ around 11.8-12:1 which is way too lean for 93 octane gas that I use.
