its a uk evo8 ran on 97ron super unleaded (check our uk to usa specs of ron differences)
boost was max 1.35bar seems to hold that not too bad nice steady fall of boost i'd say.

~92 octane US should be good enough for 20psi...that is a bit unusual.
I'd start by doing a boost leak test using an air compressor (visual inspections won't find all the leaks)
can you post the .csv in zip file? I'd like to take a look

saw it but it's missing a few things:
I would turn it down 1psi at a time until the knock subsides until you can do a boost leak test.
then when you're up for it...do 3 back to back 3rd gear pulls. Start the logger, get your car to 2500 RPM and hold it there for a few seconds, then suddenly go to 100% throttle and hold it to redline with only these items being logged.
* TPS
* RPM
* TimingAdv
* O2Sensor
* InjPulseWidth
* Battery
* LoadCalc (load in mitsulogger)
* KnockSum
* AFRMAP
I'd like to see that log

but the ecu did not remove enough timing or act quickly enough to bring those knock counts down to a safer level, or is it near impossible for it to react so quickly etc ?

correct, I would reduce boost until the knock subsides and you can do a proper boost leak test with an air compressor. you might also try increasing the octane if possible to see if the knock is quelled.
the problem with the stock ECU is that it's reactive...it has to see knock before it reacts by adding fuel and pulling timing. With a proper tune the fuel/timing will be adjusted so that the ecu doesn't have to get involved, because when it does, it's going to pull too much timing and add too much fuel and in your case it still didn't stop the knock so the car is no only dangerous but slow.

I think the JDM map runs more timing than UK spec cars. You could try using a timing map from an Evo 260 or lower spec FQ car. These maps are intended for UK spec fuel.

but i will lower the boost and see what happens first then
i might try some vpower higher octane
i'll log and log
