If it was 4 digit # it could go to 9999 but actually its a hex number anyway so with that it could also contain letters ranging from A-F (In easy to understand terms)This follows the fact that there at 16 possible digits with 4 places worth of digits. The calculator takes care of the crunching using "nPr". There is a formula behind this.
