How much timing for Evo 8 Peak

How much timing at peak load people usually tune Evo 8 for high torque? I am at approx 4* and 23~24 PSI and torque is not very high. It is in the 320 Ft/Lb range. I am going to try 5* but was curious what others use.

Every car is different. Mine like 4* peak at 25psi on my Green. Anymore than that and I get some knock.

If I remember correctly 4* is about as high as you want to go on an VIII, but like testudo said every car is different.

Try searching for "MBT" or "Maximum Brake Torque". There are a few example maps. You want to go as high as you can without hitting knock, but not beyond the point of diminishing returns. I believe john bradely stated that when you approach MBT you can make maybe 5-10hp more adding a degree of timing, but you double cylinder pressure. Note, you probably won't hit MBT on pump gas, but if you can more power to you.

I am not sure if it was Evo 8 or 9 but one of them can ussually take 7~8 at peak. Maybe those are the Evo 9.

I know one of them take a lot at peak and not much at high RPM and the other one is the opposite. Not a lot at peak but more at high RPMs.

BTW I am currently at 280 load and 3~4*. Will be trying 280 load and 4~5* hopefully tonight

How much timing will your Evo 8 take at 6000 and 8000?

Mine takes approx.
8 at 6000
10 at 7000
14 at 8000 (some knock)

racer1, you running 93 or less?

VIIIs get less down low and more on top than the IXs.

fwiw I get around 14 to 15 at 7k and 250 load

I am on 93 but struggling to get more than 10 at~11 at 7000. Maybe it is the stock intake that it is more prone to knock. I am also at 11.5 but will try to richen a bit. My load by 7000 is also 250 but even at 10* I get occasional knock I am not sure why. That is 22.5 psi by 7000 according to my MAP sensor.

notthere,

Are you on stock cams? I am running Kelford 272.

racer135.....have you done any adjustment to the knock sensitivity? It could be that because of your mods the stock settings are "too sensitive".

You should be able to run more boost than just 23....I am talking 25ish on 93.

My VIII on 93 will take 4 to 5 degrees at peak torque (310 load at 26-27psi) and I am in the low to mid teens up top.

It almost sounds like there is something mechanical wrong.

As for getting more torque out of the car, try to get your turbo to spool sooner (lower RPM) and give it a little more boost.

It is mid to high 80s F here. Kind of nice weather.

I have not made any changes to the knock filters. I have tried about the same as you but with lower loads. 4~5 at peak with load in the 280s and about 14 by redline (8000) with load about 230. So I am not sure if I should change my knock settings. The sensitive area for the car is below 6K RPMs where it does not like timing. After 6K I can add without much issues if it is not aggressive. I will post a timing log when I get home.

I am also following the tuning for faster spool thread but I am still full boost at about 4-4.1K RPMs not sure why.

Mine is 10 at 6k, 12 at 7k and 15 ~8k. I am around 10.9 to 11.2 A/F at 8k depending on weather.

Very low in my case:

2004 evo8, stock turbo, helix cams, cam gears +1/-3, 91 octane, 6000'.

-1 degree @ 255 baro_temp_cor_load @ 3800 RPM. At my altitude, that's around 23-24 psi. My gas sucks.

I'm usually at 3-4 degrees at 28psi peak on 93, and I have it taper down to 25psi through the rpm range and timing jumps to around 10* at 6000rpm and 16* by 7500. I have small cams though, only HKS 272's and a semi-stock ported turbo.
