I think computer does not matter... I guess that ECU tuning is not the computer 's primary use for most of us...
If you want it just to tune your car, get the cheapest one, go XP SP2, avoid antivirus, web tools bar & plugins, and just install Ecu flash, Evoscan and Excel... it will make it!!!

My last tuning device was a 800MHz Pentium III tablet made by Toshiba running Windows 2000. The only reason I don't still use it is because of the screen size (800x600 is tough to work with).
My wife has your exact laptop, and I've never had a problem using it in a pinch. You have a software issue, from the sounds of it, perhaps a problem with the FTDI driver or a mismatch between driver and libraries. Welcome to Windows.
I'll echo Vigman's post: if it's a dedicated tuning laptop, buy based on price and form-factor (netbooks can be particularly nice, as they can usually fit in the glove box).

Sony Vaio, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit,4G ram, AMD Athlon P320 2.1 GHz Dual-Core Processor (no front side bus). Extra laptop battery in my carrying case
I have learned that you can never have enough processing power, screen resolution or battery life for a tuning laptop. Adequate RAM is a must as well if you run a lot of apps at once. I have used the bottom of the barrel laptops over the years and regretted every single one. Every minute I am in a customers car dinking with my laptop just looks worse and worse on me. Plus I have better things to do than reboot or wait for my laptop to catch up. With the amount of logging items and DMA resolution happening these days, why get a setup that will get bogged down easily? I don't have a solid state hard drive but I would always recommend one for a custom tuning laptop. Just my opinion, everyones will differ.

Currrently using ASUS T-91 on XP home w/2g Ram. I also swapped the 16gig SDD for a Runcore 32gig SSD. I use logworks/openport 1.3 and works like a charm. The 1.3GHz atom proccesor hates EVOscan it takes forever to load and shutdown.
Alternate
Dell Lat D400, XPpro,1.7GHz, 40G hdd 2g ram, no issues with evoscan
