Eric if you want to build your own here is the thread. I can give you some explanation. I am not sure if Java is supported on Android, but if you need the source drop me a mail.
With regards to OBDII compliant modules as one selected by you, here is a short howto for MUT over OBD (hybrid mode)

Yes, Android's language is Java. So, if you have already written your code in Java, it should be pretty easy to fit it right into an Android app.
I would love to see your source if you're willing to share.
I ordered that adapter that I linked to previously to take a shot with it. If it doesn't work or doesn't perform well enough, I will look for something better.

Minor setback...received my bluetooth OBD adapter yesterday (the one pictured in one of my previous posts).
As soon as I plugged it into the OBD port, there was a pop. So, something blew on the circuitry...when I shake it now, I can hear something rattling around in there (piece of crap ) I browsed the reviews/forum on dealextreme and noticed one other person had the same issue. So, I filed for a return/replacement and am waiting a reply.
Hopefully I get another one and it works. This is only $50, so not that bad. There are some that are about $20, too. I think this is a knock-off ELM327 chip though...that's why I want to test it out to see if it will do what I want. Most ELM327 bluetooth adapters are around $120 or so.
Anyway, waiting for round 2.

Sign me up! I have a droid running froyo and would be all over it. There is a app called torque that is suppose to be able to log things from the OBDII port via those bluetooth connectors. Maybe talk with the developer?

This unit seems a little nicer but is double the price.

That particular one has a cable attached. There are definitely nice ones out there, but they are around $120 or so. The generic ones are from $20 and up. The one I tried is $50, but one didn't work already and I'm not sure if it's a true ELM327.
I just don't want to invest too much right now just to learn Android development. If a generic chip will work for what I want (MUT logging via bluetooth), then that will suffice for now.
Once I get a functioning unit, I can start some testing.

So, I might pull a few pins off of this for the pins that I know aren't needed. Without taking this apart I can't tell how have this wired, but I can eliminate certain pins that shouldn't be needed (like pin 9 for etacs ecu, etc).
I hate to take any pins out, since I want this to be as universal as possible and work on any vehicle, but I just don't want it to break again when I plug it into my Evo. Hmmm...what to do, what to do.
I was thinking of some way to keep all the pins but disable them, like putting a thin plastic coating on them (nail polish maybe), but I don't want to rig this thing in any difficult or retarded way.

eric maybe use a 2nd OBD plug and attact wires to only the necessary wires on this thing.
but apart from faulty hardware i cant see why it would blow up. i mean obd is universal so if they think it work with carA fine then it should not blow up on the OBD of the evo.
