Trying to dial in fuel and eliminate knock

OK so Ive been playing with my tune for a while now. I have had a few "pro tunes" and ive changed some parts since the last one so I need to retune. I was very unsatisfied with my last pro tune and am having a hard time ponying up cash to pay for another one. (Side note the Tune I got from Chris@Mellon tuning was awesome and the only reason i didnt go back is because i wanted to try a dyno tune and I am not local to Chris)

So the last couple of weeks ive been giving my tune another go. I have several problems.

First being that EvoScan is logging with very low resolution. Sometimes it wont even log the good stuff. Meaning the logger is running up to 3500rpm @100tps and then cuts out till 5000 @100tps. I have had this same problem on several different computers that i have tried useing for logging. All Xp machines and I tried Vista once.

What is shown here is all I am logging so I cant imagine that the low resolutions is from me logging to many items.

Ive posted the timing and fuel maps that were used for this log below. I know the 6k+ area is almost 1 full point leaner and I need to fix that. I apparently was spacing out when I converted my standard maps to tephras v7 big maps.

The log below is actually taken before the log posted above. Sorry for posting these backwards. Its late and im tired/frustrated. Timing and Fuel maps posted after

You can see that I tried retarding the timing at around 3k-4k 100-200load a degree or two to help reduce any knock. Would this be considered tip in knock? Also I started out at 22psi and then ran the second try with less boost (around 18-19psi)

A little info about the car.

2003 VIII
GSC S2's with beehive springs
Buchur racing TBE with test pipe
Open element filter with MAF adapter (stock intake tube)
ETS V2 LICP
IX turbo with ceramic coated Megan SS O2 housing
Hallman MBC

This post seems to be unorganized at best and I appologize for that. I guess im just frustrated that I cant seem to get the knock under control so I can dial in my fuel perfectly then start tuning the timing. On top of this Im surprised that im maxing out the stock injectors so easily. When i first put the IX turbo on i was at about 25psi and 95-100+IDC Not good im assuming. Thats why I started to turn the boost down and see what i could do.

Constructive criticism or suggestions etc are welcomed!

Thanks,

Ethan

how many items are u logging... in evoscan just log the bare minimum (under 10 at the max) otherwise it does not have very good resolution. from the above why arent u using 1byte load and normal rpm... usign the two byte equvalents has u wasting 2 requests each sample for no benefit.

unless ur running ur rom on temp + baro compensated load. but hes right. enable logger superspeed, disable logging to screen, disable multi-threading, disable dashboard flashing lights as well as keep it under 10 items, as ziad mentioned. and 2byte rpm does nothing but waste a byte as ziad mentioned.

I guess I was under the impression that the 2byte equivalents were more accurate?I do realize that instead of taking up 1byte each they are now taking up 2 but when logging so few items it wasnt a big deal. About a year or two ago when I was previously playing with my tune I dont think this 2byte to 1 byte load was available. I do have the tephra V7 installed and am using Evoscan. So I just need to make sure the load factors are the same and just log 1 byte load is this correct?

Also has it been decided that the standard RPM is fine to use for tuning? The 2byteRPM is no longer worthwhile?

I will check the logger super speed and what is multi-threading? I guess i can turn off logging to screen but i didnt think it would slow it down that much. I was also running a AFR gauge so the passenger could keep an eye on my AFR. I do have m CEL knock light enabled so I guess I could just monitor that....

Anymore information on this temp+baro compensated load? Is this for use with speed density? Ill have to do some research on this...

Thanks, Ethan

Logging to screen slows down the logger a LOT. Definitely turn that off for better resolution. And yes, just use 1 byte load.

Good to know. I will try again this afternoon with all of those features disabled.

Side question. How do people properly setup low octane maps? All these changes are made to the high octane but when are changes made to the low octane?

Ill report back with some more results and hopefully i can get my afr in check and knock under control. Im still debating weather or not some of it is real knock or not...

Ok so i disabled all of the uneeded extras as you guys had mentioned. The logged data now has a whole lot more resolution.

For some reason my LC-1 has devoloped a weird problem during logging. It is only giving what seems to be a correct reading about 5 times a second where im getting 25 lines of logged data a second. Ive posted a portion of the log that shows this below.

Heres my real problem. I am getting very inconsistant results with knock. Ive tried to eliminate by dialing in my fuel and bringing back timing quite a bit in areas where ive seen knock. One run i will get no knock or just a small group of 1 counts and then another run i will get upto 15 counts of knock. Ill post two logs taken 3 min apart from each other with no changes to the tune.

Virtually knock free run

As I said earlier both of these pulls were done on the same tune about 3 min apart.

Heres the Fuel and Ignition maps

Any ideas on how to attack this?

Hello Ethan,

How big are your injectors and what does your injector latency map look like?

It might help.

Johnson,

I am running the stock injectors still. Had them on there since day 1. I think it might be time to upgade to a larger injector. I really didnt think that with the few mods I have that I would be maxing out the stock injectors. I even lowered to boost down to 18-20psi and im still at 90% in the upper rpms.

Here my Latency table. It should be stock...

So I performed a boost leak test last night and couldnt really find anything major. It sounds like i could be leaking just a tiny bit around the J-pipe to LICP coupler or the flange where the J-pipe mounts to the compressor of the turbo. Its not really that audible and I can feel anything as far as air leaking around those areas. I have a feeling that it might be the air leaking through the engine becasue of the current valve position and what im hearing is it going through the down pipe?.... Anyway I bought a spray bottle so I can spray some soapy water up there and check for bubbles. I have a feeling that this isnt the case though....

Anyone else have any ideas for the tune? Is my timing at the low rpm low-mid load too jumpy or high? Not smooth enough maybe? The car is an absolute toilet right now with the low boost and timing. Im at a loss here.

There is one other thing that I thought has a small possibility of creating false knock. I have a MAF adapter on my stock intake tube with an open element dry filter. There is no solid bracket holding the tube still anymore. I have a some what half assed zip tie setup that holds it somewhat firm until I can fab up a bracket. Ive just been kind of busy at work and it seemed to be ok. Could there be some vibration of the MAF causing turbulence creating my issues?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks,

Ethan

A smoother timing map would definitely help, but I don't think that would be the only cause.
