Engine Simulator for ECU development?

So I have been trying to create an engine simulator for the Mitsubishi ECU's, and I have stumbled on to something interesting. I currently have a simple bench-test setup for the ECU. I can read, flash, and log the ECU. Simple right? Hook up some power pins and the Comm pins and we are good to go.

I then used a small micro-controller to generate the Cam and Crank wave forms. I basically matched the wave forms in the service manual:

The evo ECU will not register RPMs, I can log MUT A2 and see the bits toggle that represent the cam and crank sensor. I have disabled the immobilizer in the periphery bit, verified my wiring. But still no dice.

Here is were it gets interesting, if I hook up a 2G ECU, it works! So is there something I am missing? Does the EVO ecu monitor something else to see if the engine is running? Fuel pump relay, MFI relay? I am at a loss here as to why it is not working.

Also, is there any interest in a bench-top simulator/ECU tester. I gotta think it would be nice for tracking down hard to find bugs like IPW jitter. It would be nice to give back to the community

Thanks in advance,

It looks to see when the starter is engaged, but even then I wouldn't think it would stop it from working.

Very cool project though.

Which control bit is the cam and which the crank?

It can't be that as how would you "pop" start the car? (i.e. rolling with the car in gear and pop the clutch to spin the motor over).

But keep those ideas coming. It has to be something simple that I am missing.

That's exactly what I was thinking to and why I didn't think it would be an issue. Although, does it need to be grounded or something and it's in a "cranking" mode right now?

I have not looked at the circuit close enough in the manuals, but I think it is+12v when cranking to that pin, so pin 82 gets +12v when the the key is on or start, and pin 71 gets +12 when your turn to start.

Ok, I played around with this some more tonight and I have it working. I apparently must have had a bad flash? I changed a few things with the immobilizer, set code to 0x000, double checked the Periphery0.bit3, and reflashed and it works.

So I can simulate a running engine now (RPM and MAF), I was thinking of including:

* RPM
* MAP
* Baro
* MAF
* Coolant
* Air temp (MAF)
* air temp (GM)
* O2

Think of anything else? The hard part is done

Just something simple but output indicators for the actuators?

Thanks for the info on the crank and cam bits.
