Unhappy Evo IX - car wont start after ecu upgrade

Noob here who has never used or updated ecu before, did as much pre-reading as could (with limited patience) and now car wont start after upgrade. Assume is me. Pretty embarassed at this stage. Wife laughing how am going to get to work.

2007 evo 9 (australian delivered) all stock. Using evoscan 2.9 with 1.3u cable. Standard rom of 88580014.

Noticed I could not read rom unless car was warm first "no response to any known code". Dont know if this is due low battery or what though.

Downloaded and installed tephramod-v7 "88591715-TephraMod.bin".

Loaded this rom successfully (same deal car had to be warm) had ECU-unlocker runing in background just in case. After rom upgrade says to turn off ignition and turn back on.

Sadly at this stage car wont start.

Assume I have done something wrong, probably is the wrong rom, migrated incorrect immobiliser code, did not disable immobiliser, have the valet mode on or I have just bricked the ecu etc. Dash lights are all normal.

I cant even read rom now (in ecuflash or evoscan) as think is related to car being cold (error below) but is catch 22 as cant start the car to get the engine warm and dont think hot water bottles would help. I have not checked battery voltage levels either if this makes a difference.

Assume I will either need to do flash recovery mode or something

I can open my "backup" rom in ecuflash but dont know what to look for.

Any guidance, pointers or assistance appreciated!

hey mate,

you have loaded the wrong ROM to your car. first off you have the speed density ROM, so unless you have installed an IAT and connected it to the ECU as well as have done a bunch of other things to the car to get SD working, then the car will never start.

secondly you need 88580714 (8858 family) and not the 8859 family ROM. ECU pins are different. you can switch between ROM families, but there is alot of work needed to get this done.

Your ROM reading issue is a battery voltage issue, so you can either attach the battery to a charger and read the ROM or if you dont have that, connect it with jump cables to another car and read the ROM

hopefully you saved your original ROM first before the change.

cheers

thanks 07EvoIX, was hoping someone was not going to tell me I had the wrong rom - I could not actually find any updated 88580714 rom (any pointers here)

In terms of voltage issue, gold thank you

Luckily backed up original rom - just hope it works!

So assume next steps will be:
1. Charge battery/jumper leads
2. Reload original rom
3. Check works again
4. Find someone elses 88580714 "updated handywork"
5. Upload new rom
6. have updated working ecu

the ROM you need is in the Tephra V7 thread, on the first page just Ctrl+F and search for 8858 if you cant find it yourself.

cheers

thank you!

Definitely trickle charging my battery was needed to reflash ecu.

Restoring my original "backed up rom" worked a treat.

Found the 88580014 rom and xml file as you suggested.

Now spent the time understanding all the tephra options (thanks tephra) and edited xml file accordingly.

Uploaded new 88580014 rom and modified xml file with most options off to keep simple (including valet mode) but car still does not start. Know the new rom sorta works though, as when have "Restore ICS State Fresh Ignition" enabled, press the ICS button, turn off ignition and remembers the button state

Any ideas or should I give up now (stop chuckling pls)

other than the imob code you need to copy ALL your original settings over to the new ROM. literally need to look at each table and compare.

for the fuel and timing, you need to use the big map translator that is in the v7 thread (post 3 i think).

cheers
